It just makes it easier to see if the reference profile is sensible or not.

Blackhole regions should be completely ignored, i.e. don't even call boxi() on such a pixel.
This is distinct from pixels which can be used (e.g. for initial centroiding), but which happen
not to be selected for background or peak integration.
