2008-08-12docsrc: build Documentation/ sourcesRandy Dunlap
Currently source files in the Documentation/ sub-dir can easily bit-rot since they are not generally buildable, either because they are hidden in text files or because there are no Makefile rules for them. This needs to be fixed so that the source files remain usable and good examples of code instead of bad examples. Add the ability to build source files that are in the Documentation/ dir. Add to Kconfig as "BUILD_DOCSRC" config symbol. Use "CONFIG_BUILD_DOCSRC=1 make ..." to build objects from the Documentation/ sources. Or enable BUILD_DOCSRC in the *config system. However, this symbol depends on HEADERS_CHECK since the header files need to be installed (for userspace builds). Built (using cross-tools) for x86-64, i386, alpha, ia64, sparc32, sparc64, powerpc, sh, m68k, & mips. 2008-03-06mac80211: add documentation bookJohannes Berg
Quite a while ago I started this book. The required kernel-doc patches have since gone into the tree so it is now possible to build the book in mainline. The actual documentation is still rather incomplete and not all things are linked into the book, but this enables us to edit the documentation collaboratively, hopefully driver authors can add documentation based on their experience with mac80211. 2006-12-30[PATCH] respect srctree/objtree in Documentation/DocBook/MakefileMike Frysinger

2006-12-06[PATCH] Clean up 'make help' output for documentation targets.Jesper Juhl
Here's a patch that cleans up the "make help" output a bit for the documentation targets. Currently the documentation targets are listed completely different than all the other targets : Documentation targets: Linux kernel internal documentation in different formats: xmldocs (XML DocBook), psdocs (Postscript), pdfdocs (PDF) htmldocs (HTML), mandocs (man pages, use installmandocs to install) with this patch they are more in line with the rest of the output : Documentation targets: Linux kernel internal documentation in different formats: htmldocs - HTML installmandocs - install man pages generated by mandocs mandocs - man pages pdfdocs - PDF psdocs - Postscript xmldocs - XML DocBook Signed-off-by: Jesper Juhl <jesper.juhl@gmail.com> Acked-by: Randy Dunlap <randy.dunlap@oracle.com> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

2006-03-06kbuild: change kbuild to not rely on incorrect GNU make behaviorPaul Smith
The kbuild system takes advantage of an incorrect behavior in GNU make. Once this behavior is fixed, all files in the kernel rebuild every time, even if nothing has changed. This patch ensures kbuild works with both the incorrect and correct behaviors of GNU make. For more details on the incorrect behavior, see: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-make/2006-03/msg00003.html Changes in this patch: - Keep all targets that are to be marked .PHONY in a variable, PHONY. - Add .PHONY: $(PHONY) to mark them properly. - Remove any $(PHONY) files from the $? list when determining whether targets are up-to-date or not. 2005-11-13[PATCH] DocBook: revert xmlto use for .ps and .pdf documentationMartin Waitz
As xmlto doesn't work for print documentation, we need docbook-utils again for these targets. This patch allows the user to choose the method he wants to use. (I'm still hoping that someone will fix passivetex ;-) Signed-off-by: Martin Waitz <tali@admingilde.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-11-07[PATCH] RapidIO support: core baseMatt Porter
Adds a RapidIO subsystem to the kernel. RIO is a switched fabric interconnect used in higher-end embedded applications. The curious can look at the specs over at http://www.rapidio.org The core code implements enumeration/discovery, management of devices/resources, and interfaces for RIO drivers. There's a lot more to do to take advantages of all the hardware features. However, this should provide a good base for folks with RIO hardware to start contributing. 2005-05-01[PATCH] DocBook: Use xmlto to process the DocBook files.Martin Waitz
xmlto uses standared XSLT templates to generate manpages, (x)html pages, and XML FO files which can be processed with passivetex. This is much faster than using jadetex for everything. 2005-04-16Linux-2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
