2007-02-11[PATCH] Set CONFIG_ZONE_DMA for arches with GENERIC_ISA_DMAChristoph Lameter
As Andi pointed out: CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA only disables the ISA DMA channel management. Other functionality may still expect GFP_DMA to provide memory below 16M. So we need to make sure that CONFIG_ZONE_DMA is set independent of CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA. Undo the modifications to mm/Kconfig where we made ZONE_DMA dependent on GENERIC_ISA_DMA and set theses explicitly in each arches Kconfig. Reviews must occur for each arch in order to determine if ZONE_DMA can be switched off. It can only be switched off if we know that all devices supported by a platform are capable of performing DMA transfers to all of memory (Some arches already support this: uml, avr32, sh sh64, parisc and IA64/Altix). In order to switch ZONE_DMA off conditionally, one would have to establish a scheme by which one can assure that no drivers are enabled that are only capable of doing I/O to a part of memory, or one needs to provide an alternate means of performing an allocation from a specific range of memory (like provided by alloc_pages_range()) and insure that all drivers use that call. In that case the arches alloc_dma_coherent() may need to be modified to call alloc_pages_range() instead of relying on GFP_DMA. 2007-01-05[PATCH] i386: Restore CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START optionVivek Goyal
o Relocatable bzImage support had got rid of CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START option thinking that now this option is not required as people can build a second kernel as relocatable and load it anywhere. So need of compiling the kernel for a custom address was gone. But Magnus uses vmlinux images for second kernel in Xen environment and he wants to continue to use it. o Restoring the CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START option for the time being. I think down the line we can get rid of it. Signed-off-by: Vivek Goyal <vgoyal@in.ibm.com> Cc: "Eric W. 2006-12-08[PATCH] Generic BUG for i386Jeremy Fitzhardinge
This makes i386 use the generic BUG machinery. There are no functional changes from the old i386 implementation. The main advantage in using the generic BUG machinery for i386 is that the inlined overhead of BUG is just the ud2a instruction; the file+line(+function) information are no longer inlined into the instruction stream. This reduces cache pollution, and makes disassembly work properly. 2006-12-07[PATCH] paravirt: header and stubs for paravirtualisationRusty Russell
Create a paravirt.h header for all the critical operations which need to be replaced with hypervisor calls, and include that instead of defining native operations, when CONFIG_PARAVIRT. This patch does the dumbest possible replacement of paravirtualized instructions: calls through a "paravirt_ops" structure. Currently these are function implementations of native hardware: hypervisors will override the ops structure with their own variants. All the pv-ops functions are declared "fastcall" so that a specific register-based ABI is used, to make inlining assember easier. And: +From: Andy Whitcroft <apw@shadowen.org> The paravirt ops introduce a 'weak' attribute onto memory_setup(). Code ordering leads to the following warnings on x86: arch/i386/kernel/setup.c:651: warning: weak declaration of `memory_setup' after first use results in unspecified behavior Move memory_setup() to avoid this. 2006-12-07[PATCH] i386: Implement CONFIG_PHYSICAL_ALIGNVivek Goyal
o Now CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START is being replaced with CONFIG_PHYSICAL_ALIGN. Hardcoding the kernel physical start value creates a problem in relocatable kernel context due to boot loader limitations. For ex, if somebody compiles a relocatable kernel to be run from address 4MB, but this kernel will run from location 1MB as grub loads the kernel at physical address 1MB. Kernel thinks that I am a relocatable kernel and I should run from the address I have been loaded at. So somebody wanting to run kernel from 4MB alignment location (for improved performance regions) can't do that. o Hence, Eric proposed that probably CONFIG_PHYSICAL_ALIGN will make more sense in relocatable kernel context. At run time kernel will move itself to a physical addr location which meets user specified alignment restrictions. 2006-12-07[PATCH] i386: Relocatable kernel supportEric W. Biederman
This patch modifies the i386 kernel so that if CONFIG_RELOCATABLE is selected it will be able to be loaded at any 4K aligned address below 1G. The technique used is to compile the decompressor with -fPIC and modify it so the decompressor is fully relocatable. For the main kernel relocations are generated. Resulting in a kernel that is relocatable with no runtime overhead and no need to modify the source code. A reserved 32bit word in the parameters has been assigned to serve as a stack so we figure out where are running. Signed-off-by: Eric W. 2006-10-02[PATCH] Kprobes: Make kprobe modules more portableAnanth N Mavinakayanahalli
In an effort to make kprobe modules more portable, here is a patch that: o Introduces the "symbol_name" field to struct kprobe. The symbol->address resolution now happens in the kernel in an architecture agnostic manner. 64-bit powerpc users no longer have to specify the ".symbols" o Introduces the "offset" field to struct kprobe to allow a user to specify an offset into a symbol. o The legacy mechanism of specifying the kprobe.addr is still supported. However, if both the kprobe.addr and kprobe.symbol_name are specified, probe registration fails with an -EINVAL. o The symbol resolution code uses kallsyms_lookup_name(). So CONFIG_KPROBES now depends on CONFIG_KALLSYMS o Apparantly kprobe modules were the only legitimate out-of-tree user of the kallsyms_lookup_name() EXPORT. Now that the symbol resolution happens in-kernel, remove the EXPORT as suggested by Christoph Hellwig o Modify tcp_probe.c that uses the kprobe interface so as to make it work on multiple platforms (in its earlier form, the code wouldn't work, say, on powerpc) Signed-off-by: Ananth N Mavinakayanahalli <ananth@in.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Prasanna S Panchamukhi <prasanna@in.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2006-09-27[PATCH] x86 microcode: add sysfs and hotplug supportShaohua Li
Add sysfs support. Currently each CPU has three microcode related attributes. One is 'version' which shows current ucode version of CPU. Tools can use the attribute do validation or show CPU ucode status. one is 'reload' which allows manually reloading ucode. Another is 'processor_flags', which exports processor flags, so we can write tools to check if CPU has latest ucode. Also add suspend/resume and CPU hotplug support. 2006-09-26[PATCH] x86: enable VMSPLIT for highmem kernelsDave Hansen
The current VMSPLIT Kconfig option is disabled whenever highmem is on. This is a bit screwy because the people who need to change VMSPLIT the most tend to be the ones with highmem and constrained lowmem. So, remove the highmem dependency. But, re-include the dependency for the "full 1GB of lowmem" option. You can't have the full 1GB of lowmem and highmem because of the need for the vmalloc(), kmap(), etc... areas. I thought there would be at least a bit of tweaking to do to get it to work, but everything seems OK. 2006-06-29[PATCH] solve config broken: undefined reference to `online_page'Yasunori Goto

2006-06-27[PATCH] vdso: randomize the i386 vDSO by moving it into a vmaIngo Molnar
Move the i386 VDSO down into a vma and thus randomize it. Besides the security implications, this feature also helps debuggers, which can COW a vma-backed VDSO just like a normal DSO and can thus do single-stepping and other debugging features. It's good for hypervisors (Xen, VMWare) too, which typically live in the same high-mapped address space as the VDSO, hence whenever the VDSO is used, they get lots of guest pagefaults and have to fix such guest accesses up - which slows things down instead of speeding things up (the primary purpose of the VDSO). There's a new CONFIG_COMPAT_VDSO (default=y) option, which provides support for older glibcs that still rely on a prelinked high-mapped VDSO. Newer distributions (using glibc 2.3.3 or later) can turn this option off. Turning it off is also recommended for security reasons: attackers cannot use the predictable high-mapped VDSO page as syscall trampoline anymore. There is a new vdso=[0|1] boot option as well, and a runtime /proc/sys/vm/vdso_enabled sysctl switch, that allows the VDSO to be turned on/off. (This version of the VDSO-randomization patch also has working ELF coredumping, the previous patch crashed in the coredumping code.) This code is a combined work of the exec-shield VDSO randomization code and Gerd Hoffmann's hypervisor-centric VDSO patch. Rusty Russell started this patch and i completed it. Commit 1e9f28fa1eb9773bf65bae08288c6a0a38eef4a7 ("[PATCH] sched: new sched domain for representing multi-core") incorrectly made SCHED_SMT and some of the structures it uses dependent on SMP. - Factor out the duplicated access/cache code into a single file * Shared between i386/x86-64. - Share flush code between AGP and IOMMU * Fix a bug: AGP didn't wait for end of flush before - Drop 8 northbridges limit and allocate dynamically - Add lock to serialize AGP and IOMMU GART flushes - Add PCI ID for next AMD northbridge - Random related cleanups The old K8 NUMA discovery code is unchanged. New systems should all use SRAT for this. 2006-06-26[PATCH] Time: i386 Conversion - part 3: Enable Generic Timekeepingjohn stultz
This converts the i386 arch to use the generic timeofday subsystem. It enabled the GENERIC_TIME option, disables the timer_opts code and other arch specific timekeeping code and reworks the delay code. While this patch enables the generic timekeeping, please note that this patch does not provide any i386 clocksource. Thus only the jiffies clocksource will be available. To get full replacements for the code being disabled here, the timeofday-clocks-i386 patch will needed. 2006-04-28[PATCH] Mark VMSPLIT EMBEDDEDAndi Kleen
Running abnormal VM splits causes weird problems - people can set non-standard splits by accident, then lots of time gets wasted diagnosing it - see the long "[stable] 2.6.16.6 breaks java... sort of" email thread. So we need to make this option harder to set. Use CONFIG_EMBEDDED for this. CONFIG_EMBEDDED isn't really the right thing to use, but there's nothing else obvious and avoiding these problems is more important than Kconfig purity. 2006-04-28[PATCH] enable X86_PC for HOTPLUG_CPUAshok Raj
CPU_HOTPLUG has race conditions when we use broadcast mode IPI. - First we introduced no_broadcast option (see include/asm-i386/mach-default/mach_ipi.h) - x86_64 solved it by using physical flat mode (same as bigsmp on i386) since this will not use broadcast shortcuts for IPI. - We switched to use bigsmp on i386 so that we can have same handling as x86_64, but apparently this caused an error message, if kernel was compiled without X86_GENERICARCH, X86_BIGSMP. The message "You have >8 CPUS..." which was bogus and misleading, and only indicated one of the above ARCH wasnt selected. So we do not switch to automatic bigsmp for HOTPLUG_CPU support in i386 until the other related config dependencies for SMP_SUSPEND etc can be done right. 2006-04-11[PATCH] Configurable NODES_SHIFTYasunori Goto
Current implementations define NODES_SHIFT in include/asm-xxx/numnodes.h for each arch. Its definition is sometimes configurable. Indeed, ia64 defines 5 NODES_SHIFT values in the current git tree. But it looks a bit messy. SGI-SN2(ia64) system requires 1024 nodes, and the number of nodes already has been changeable by config. Suitable node's number may be changed in the future even if it is other architecture. So, I wrote configurable node's number. This patch set defines just default value for each arch which needs multi nodes except ia64. But, it is easy to change to configurable if necessary. On ia64 the number of nodes can be already configured in generic ia64 and SN2 config. But, NODES_SHIFT is defined for DIG64 and HP'S machine too. So, I changed it so that all platforms can be configured via CONFIG_NODES_SHIFT. It would be simpler. 2006-03-27[PATCH] sched: new sched domain for representing multi-coreSiddha, Suresh B
Add a new sched domain for representing multi-core with shared caches between cores. Consider a dual package system, each package containing two cores and with last level cache shared between cores with in a package. If there are two runnable processes, with this appended patch those two processes will be scheduled on different packages. On such systems, with this patch we have observed 8% perf improvement with specJBB(2 warehouse) benchmark and 35% improvement with CFP2000 rate(with 2 users). This new domain will come into play only on multi-core systems with shared caches. On other systems, this sched domain will be removed by domain degeneration code. This new domain can be also used for implementing power savings policy (see OLS 2005 CMP kernel scheduler paper for more details.. I will post another patch for power savings policy soon) Most of the arch/* file changes are for cpu_coregroup_map() implementation. 2006-03-25[PATCH] x86: make CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU depend on !X86_PCAshok Raj
Make CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU depend on !X86_PC, so we need to turn on either CONFIG_GENERICARCH, CONFIG_BIGSMP or any other subarch except X86_PC when CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU=y With 2.6.15+ kernels when CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU is turned on we switch to bigsmp mode for sending IPI's and ioapic configurations that caused the following error message. >> More than 8 CPUs detected and CONFIG_X86_PC cannot handle it. >> Use CONFIG_X86_GENERICARCH or CONFIG_X86_BIGSMP. Originally bigsmp was added just to handle >8 cpus, but now with hotplug cpu support we need to use bigsmp mode (why? see below), that cause the above error message even if there were less than 8 cpus in the system. The message is bogus, but we are cannot use logical flat mode due to issues with broadcast IPI can confuse a CPU just comming up. We use flat physical mode just like x86_64 case. More details on why bigsmp now uses flat physical mode (vs. cluster mode) in following link. http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-kernel&m=113261865814107&w=2 Signed-off-by: Ashok Raj <ashok.raj@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
