2007-05-08header cleaning: don't include smp_lock.h when not usedRandy Dunlap
Remove includes of <linux/smp_lock.h> where it is not used/needed. Suggested by Al Viro. Builds cleanly on x86_64, i386, alpha, ia64, powerpc, sparc, sparc64, and arm (all 59 defconfigs). 2007-02-16[PATCH] genirq: do not mask interrupts by defaultIngo Molnar
Never mask interrupts immediately upon request. Disabling interrupts in high-performance codepaths is rare, and on the other hand this change could recover lost edges (or even other types of lost interrupts) by conservatively only masking interrupts after they happen. (NOTE: with this change the highlevel irq-disable code still soft-disables this IRQ line - and if such an interrupt happens then the IRQ flow handler keeps the IRQ masked.) Mark i8529A controllers as 'never loses an edge'. 2007-02-16[PATCH] clockevents: i386 driversThomas Gleixner
Add clockevent drivers for i386: lapic (local) and PIT/HPET (global). Update the timer IRQ to call into the PIT/HPET driver's event handler and the lapic-timer IRQ to call into the lapic clockevent driver. The assignement of timer functionality is delegated to the core framework code and replaces the compile and runtime evalution in do_timer_interrupt_hook() Use the clockevents broadcast support and implement the lapic_broadcast function for ACPI. No changes to existing functionality. 2006-12-07[PATCH] paravirt: header and stubs for paravirtualisationRusty Russell
Create a paravirt.h header for all the critical operations which need to be replaced with hypervisor calls, and include that instead of defining native operations, when CONFIG_PARAVIRT. This patch does the dumbest possible replacement of paravirtualized instructions: calls through a "paravirt_ops" structure. Currently these are function implementations of native hardware: hypervisors will override the ops structure with their own variants. All the pv-ops functions are declared "fastcall" so that a specific register-based ABI is used, to make inlining assember easier. And: +From: Andy Whitcroft <apw@shadowen.org> The paravirt ops introduce a 'weak' attribute onto memory_setup(). Code ordering leads to the following warnings on x86: arch/i386/kernel/setup.c:651: warning: weak declaration of `memory_setup' after first use results in unspecified behavior Move memory_setup() to avoid this. 2006-10-05IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlersDavid Howells
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the Linux kernel. The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path (ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()). Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception handling. Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing. I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers. I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile with minimal configurations. This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy. Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one: struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs); And put the old one back at the end: set_irq_regs(old_regs); Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ(). In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary: - update_process_times(user_mode(regs)); - profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs); + update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs())); + profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING); I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself, except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode(). Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers: (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in the input_dev struct. (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs pointer or not. (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type irq_handler_t. 2006-10-04[PATCH] genirq: convert the i386 architecture to irq-chipsIngo Molnar
This patch converts all the i386 PIC controllers (except VisWS and Voyager, which I could not test - but which should still work as old-style IRQ layers) to the new and simpler irq-chip interrupt handling layer. 2006-09-26[PATCH] x86: - restore i8259A eoi status on resumeMatthew Garrett

2006-06-29[PATCH] genirq: rename desc->handler to desc->chipIngo Molnar
This patch-queue improves the generic IRQ layer to be truly generic, by adding various abstractions and features to it, without impacting existing functionality. While the queue can be best described as "fix and improve everything in the generic IRQ layer that we could think of", and thus it consists of many smaller features and lots of cleanups, the one feature that stands out most is the new 'irq chip' abstraction. The irq-chip abstraction is about describing and coding and IRQ controller driver by mapping its raw hardware capabilities [and quirks, if needed] in a straightforward way, without having to think about "IRQ flow" (level/edge/etc.) type of details. This stands in contrast with the current 'irq-type' model of genirq architectures, which 'mixes' raw hardware capabilities with 'flow' details. The patchset supports both types of irq controller designs at once, and converts i386 and x86_64 to the new irq-chip design. As a bonus side-effect of the irq-chip approach, chained interrupt controllers (master/slave PIC constructs, etc.) are now supported by design as well. The end result of this patchset intends to be simpler architecture-level code and more consolidation between architectures. We reused many bits of code and many concepts from Russell King's ARM IRQ layer, the merging of which was one of the motivations for this patchset. This patch: rename desc->handler to desc->chip. Originally i did not want to do this, because it's a big patch. But having both "desc->handler", "desc->handle_irq" and "action->handler" caused a large degree of confusion and made the code appear alot less clean than it truly is. I have also attempted a dual approach as well by introducing a desc->chip alias - but that just wasnt robust enough and broke frequently. So lets get over with this quickly. The conversion was done automatically via scripts and converts all the code in the kernel. This renaming patch is the first one amongst the patches, so that the remaining patches can stay flexible and can be merged and split up without having some big monolithic patch act as a merge barrier. 2005-09-26[PATCH] useless includes of linux/irq.h in arch/i386Al Viro
Most of these guys are simply not needed (pulled by other stuff via asm-i386/hardirq.h). 2005-06-25[PATCH] kexec: x86: i8259 shutdown: disable interruptsEric W. Biederman
From: Eric W. Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com> This patch disables interrupt generation from the legacy pic on reboot. Now that there is a sys_device class it should not be called while drivers are still using interrupts. There is a report about this breaking ACPI power off on some systems. http://bugme.osdl.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4041 However the final comment seems to exonerate this code. So until I get more information I believe that was a false positive. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
