2007-07-18usermodehelper: Tidy up waitingJeremy Fitzhardinge
Rather than using a tri-state integer for the wait flag in call_usermodehelper_exec, define a proper enum, and use that. I've preserved the integer values so that any callers I've missed should still work OK. 2007-05-02[PATCH] i386: Use per-cpu GDT immediately upon bootRusty Russell
Now we are no longer dynamically allocating the GDT, we don't need the "cpu_gdt_table" at all: we can switch straight from "boot_gdt_table" to the per-cpu GDT. This means initializing the cpu_gdt array in C. The boot CPU uses the per-cpu var directly, then in smp_prepare_cpus() it switches to the per-cpu copy just allocated. For secondary CPUs, the early_gdt_descr is set to point directly to their per-cpu copy. For UP the code is very simple: it keeps using the "per-cpu" GDT as per SMP, but we never have to move. 2007-01-22[PATCH] x86: fix PDA variables to work during bootJames Bottomley
The current PDA code, which went in in post 2.6.19 has a flaw in that it doesn't correctly cycle the GDT and %GS segment through the boot PDA, the CPU PDA and finally the per-cpu PDA. The bug generally doesn't show up if the boot CPU id is zero, but everything falls apart for a non zero boot CPU id. The basically kills voyager which is perfectly capable of doing non zero CPU id boots, so voyager currently won't boot without this. The fix is to be careful and actually do the GDT setups correctly. 2006-12-07[PATCH] i386: Initialize the per-CPU data areaJeremy Fitzhardinge
When a CPU is brought up, a PDA and GDT are allocated for it. The GDT's __KERNEL_PDA entry is pointed to the allocated PDA memory, so that all references using this segment descriptor will refer to the PDA. This patch rearranges CPU initialization a bit, so that the GDT/PDA are set up as early as possible in cpu_init(). Also for secondary CPUs, GDT+PDA are preallocated and initialized so all the secondary CPU needs to do is set up the ldt and load %gs. This will be important once smp_processor_id() and current use the PDA. In all cases, the PDA is set up in head.S, before a CPU starts running C code, so the PDA is always available. 2006-10-12[VOYAGER] fix up ptregs removal messJames Bottomley

2006-10-12[VOYAGER] fix genirq messJames Bottomley
The implementation of genirq in x86 completely broke voyager (and presumably visws). Since it's plugged into so much of the x86 infrastructure, you can't expect it to work unconverted. This patch introduces a voyager IRQ handler type and switches voyager to the genirq infrastructure. Signed-off-by: James Bottomley <James.Bottomley@SteelEye.com>
2006-10-05IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlersDavid Howells
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the Linux kernel. The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path (ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()). Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception handling. Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing. I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers. I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile with minimal configurations. This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy. Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one: struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs); And put the old one back at the end: set_irq_regs(old_regs); Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ(). In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary: - update_process_times(user_mode(regs)); - profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs); + update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs())); + profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING); I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself, except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode(). Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers: (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in the input_dev struct. (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs pointer or not. (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type irq_handler_t. 2006-09-26[PATCH] Voyager: tty lockingAlan Cox
Voyager fiddles with current->signal.tty without locking. It turns out that the code in question has already cleared current->signal.tty correctly because daemonize() does the right thing already. 2006-06-30[PATCH] add smp_setup_processor_id()Andrew Morton
Presently, smp_processor_id() isn't necessarily set up until setup_arch(). But it's used in boot_cpu_init() and printk() and perhaps in other places, prior to setup_arch() being called. 2006-06-29[PATCH] genirq: rename desc->handler to desc->chipIngo Molnar
This patch-queue improves the generic IRQ layer to be truly generic, by adding various abstractions and features to it, without impacting existing functionality. While the queue can be best described as "fix and improve everything in the generic IRQ layer that we could think of", and thus it consists of many smaller features and lots of cleanups, the one feature that stands out most is the new 'irq chip' abstraction. The irq-chip abstraction is about describing and coding and IRQ controller driver by mapping its raw hardware capabilities [and quirks, if needed] in a straightforward way, without having to think about "IRQ flow" (level/edge/etc.) type of details. This stands in contrast with the current 'irq-type' model of genirq architectures, which 'mixes' raw hardware capabilities with 'flow' details. The patchset supports both types of irq controller designs at once, and converts i386 and x86_64 to the new irq-chip design. As a bonus side-effect of the irq-chip approach, chained interrupt controllers (master/slave PIC constructs, etc.) are now supported by design as well. The end result of this patchset intends to be simpler architecture-level code and more consolidation between architectures. We reused many bits of code and many concepts from Russell King's ARM IRQ layer, the merging of which was one of the motivations for this patchset. This patch: rename desc->handler to desc->chip. Originally i did not want to do this, because it's a big patch. But having both "desc->handler", "desc->handle_irq" and "action->handler" caused a large degree of confusion and made the code appear alot less clean than it truly is. I have also attempted a dual approach as well by introducing a desc->chip alias - but that just wasnt robust enough and broke frequently. So lets get over with this quickly. The conversion was done automatically via scripts and converts all the code in the kernel. This renaming patch is the first one amongst the patches, so that the remaining patches can stay flexible and can be merged and split up without having some big monolithic patch act as a merge barrier. 2006-06-25[PATCH] Clean up and refactor i386 sub-architecture setupJeremy Fitzhardinge
Clean up and refactor i386 sub-architecture setup. This change moves all the code from the asm-i386/mach-*/setup_arch_pre/post.h headers, into arch/i386/mach-*/setup.c. mach-*/setup_arch_pre.h is renamed to setup_arch.h, and contains only things which should be in header files. It is purely code-motion; there should be no functional changes at all. Several functions in arch/i386/kernel/setup.c needed to be made non-static so that they're visible to the code in mach-*/setup.c. asm-i386/setup.h is used to hold the prototypes for these functions. 2006-02-26[PATCH] fix voyager after topology.c moveJames Bottomley
Commit 9c869edac591977314323a4eaad5f7633fca684f broke voyager again rather subtly because it already had its own topology exporting functions, so now each CPU gets registered twice. I think we can actually use the generic ones, so I don't propose reverting it. The attached should eliminate the voyager topology functions in favour of the generic ones. I also added a define to ensure voyager is never hotplug CPU (we don't have the support in the SMP harness). 2006-02-10[PATCH] x86: don't initialise cpu_possible_map to all onesAndrew Morton
Initialising cpu_possible_map to all-ones with CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU means that a) All for_each_cpu() loops will iterate across all NR_CPUS CPUs, rather than over possible ones. That can be quite expensive. b) Soon we'll be allocating per-cpu areas only for possible CPUs. So with CPU_MASK_ALL, we'll be wasting memory. I also switched voyager over to not use CPU_MASK_ALL in the non-CPU-hotplug case. Should be OK.. I note that parisc is also using CPU_MASK_ALL. Suggest that it stop doing that. 2005-09-05[PATCH] i386 boottime for_each_cpu brokenZwane Mwaikambo
for_each_cpu walks through all processors in cpu_possible_map, which is defined as cpu_callout_map on i386 and isn't initialised until all processors have been booted. This breaks things which do for_each_cpu iterations early during boot. So, define cpu_possible_map as a bitmap with NR_CPUS bits populated. This was triggered by a patch i'm working on which does alloc_percpu before bringing up secondary processors. From: Alexander Nyberg <alexn@telia.com> i386-boottime-for_each_cpu-broken.patch i386-boottime-for_each_cpu-broken-fix.patch The SMP version of __alloc_percpu checks the cpu_possible_map before allocating memory for a certain cpu. With the above patches the BSP cpuid is never set in cpu_possible_map which breaks CONFIG_SMP on uniprocessor machines (as soon as someone tries to dereference something allocated via __alloc_percpu, which in fact is never allocated since the cpu is not set in cpu_possible_map). It looks like visws will also need a similar fixup Signed-off-by: James Bottomley <James.Bottomley@SteelEye.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-07-26[PATCH] Don't export machine_restart, machine_halt, or machine_power_off.Eric W. Biederman
machine_restart, machine_halt and machine_power_off are machine specific hooks deep into the reboot logic, that modules have no business messing with. Usually code should be calling kernel_restart, kernel_halt, kernel_power_off, or emergency_restart. So don't export machine_restart, machine_halt, and machine_power_off so we can catch buggy users. 2005-07-13[PATCH] fix voyager subarchitecture EXPORT_SYMBOL breakage caused by ↵James Bottomley
i386_ksym reduction This patch: [PATCH] Remove i386_ksyms.c, almost made files like smp.c do their own EXPORT_SYMBOLS. This means that all subarchitectures that override these symbols now have to do the exports themselves. This patch adds the exports for voyager (which is the most affected since it has a separate smp harness). However, someone should audit all the other subarchitectures to see if any others got broken. 2005-06-23[PATCH] xen: x86: Rename usermode macroVincent Hanquez
Rename user_mode to user_mode_vm and add a user_mode macro similar to the x86-64 one. This is useful for Xen because the linux xen kernel does not runs on the same priviledge that a vanilla linux kernel, and with this we just need to redefine user_mode(). 2005-05-24[PATCH] voyager_smp.c static inline fixDominik Hackl
This patch fixes a compile bug by moving a static inline function to the right place. The body of a static inline function has to be declared before the use of this function. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
