2009-09-24cpumask: use mm_cpumask() wrapper: m32rRusty Russell
Makes code futureproof against the impending change to mm->cpu_vm_mask. It's also a chance to use the new cpumask_ ops which take a pointer (the older ones are deprecated, but there's no hurry for arch code). 2009-09-24cpumask: arch_send_call_function_ipi_mask: m32rRusty Russell
We're weaning the core code off handing cpumask's around on-stack. This introduces arch_send_call_function_ipi_mask(), and by defining it, the old arch_send_call_function_ipi is defined by the core code. We also take the chance to wean the implementations off the obsolescent for_each_cpu_mask(): making send_ipi_mask take the pointer seemed the most natural way to ensure all implementations used for_each_cpu. 2009-09-23m32r: Cleanup linker script using new linker script macros.Tim Abbott
This patch is largely a straightforward conversion. One thing to note is that the new macros use fewer separate output sections than the old code; this should have no functional impact but is relevant for people objdumping vmlinux files. Also note that it moves the .data.init_task output sections inside _edata. Signed-off-by: Tim Abbott <tabbott@ksplice.com> Signed-off-by: Hirokazu Takata <takata@linux-m32r.org>
2009-09-23m32r: Move the spi_stack_top and spu_stack_top into .init.data section.Tim Abbott
Since these get squashed into the .data output section by the m32r linker script, it seems likely that they don't need their own input sections. At Hirokazu Takata's suggestion, we place these structures in .init.data rather than just placing them in .data (since they are only used at init time). This patch is preparation for cleaning up the m32r architecture to use the new macros in vmlinux.lds.h; if these sections are indeed not needed, then we can use the RW_DATA_SECTION macro for m32r and save a bunch of redundant code. 2009-09-23m32r: Remove unused .altinstructions and .exit.* code from linker script.Tim Abbott
It appears that m32r copied the .altinstructions definition from x86 when the architecture was first merged into Linux. m32r doesn't put anything in .altinstructions, so this is just dead code. The following block affecting .exit.text/.exit.data, which has a comment also copied from x86, should also be deleted; the linker script later discards the .exit.text and .exit.data sections. 2009-09-23m32r: Move GET_THREAD_INFO definition out of asm/thread_info.h.Tim Abbott
Previously, asm/thread_info.h was not usable from linker scripts because it contains a piece of .macro code. Since that code was only used in the m32r entry.S, the right fix is probably to move the macro there. Signed-off-by: Tim Abbott <tabbott@ksplice.com> Signed-off-by: Hirokazu Takata <takata@linux-m32r.org>
2009-09-23m32r: Define THREAD_SIZE only once.Tim Abbott
Previously, m32r's asm/thread_info.h defined THREAD_SIZE differently for assembly and C code; now that PAGE_SIZE is usable from assembly, these can be combined. Also, m32r's asm/processor.h redefines THREAD_SIZE to the same value; remove this redundant definition. 2009-09-23m32r: make PAGE_SIZE available to assembly.Tim Abbott
page.h includes ifndef __ASSEMBLY__ guards, but PAGE_SIZE is defined using "1UL", which the assembler does not support. Convert m32r to use GENERIC_TIME via the arch_getoffset() infrastructure, reducing the amount of arch specific code we need to maintain. I also noted that m32r doesn't seem to be taking the xtime write lock before calling do_timer()! That looks like a pretty bad bug to me. 2009-09-22mm: add MAP_HUGETLB for mmaping pseudo-anonymous huge page regionsArnd Bergmann
Add a flag for mmap that will be used to request a huge page region that will look like anonymous memory to user space. This is accomplished by using a file on the internal vfsmount. MAP_HUGETLB is a modifier of MAP_ANONYMOUS and so must be specified with it. The region will behave the same as a MAP_ANONYMOUS region using small pages. The patch also adds the MAP_STACK flag, which was previously defined only on some architectures but not on others. Since MAP_STACK is meant to be a hint only, architectures can define it without assigning a specific meaning to it. 2009-09-20kbuild: use INSTALLKERNEL to select customized installkernel scriptSam Ravnborg
Replace the use of CROSS_COMPILE to select a customized installkernel script with the possibility to set INSTALLKERNEL to select a custom installkernel script when running make: make INSTALLKERNEL=arm-installkernel install With this patch we are now more consistent across different architectures - they did not all support use of CROSS_COMPILE. The use of CROSS_COMPILE was a hack as this really belongs to gcc/binutils and the installkernel script does not change just because we change toolchain. The use of CROSS_COMPILE caused troubles with an upcoming patch that saves CROSS_COMPILE when a kernel is built - it would no longer be installable. [Thanks to Peter Z. for this hint] This patch undos what Ian did in commit: 0f8e2d62fa04441cd12c08ce521e84e5bd3f8a46 ("use ${CROSS_COMPILE}installkernel in arch/*/boot/install.sh") The patch has been lightly tested on x86 only - but all changes looks obvious. 2009-09-02KEYS: Add a keyctl to install a process's session keyring on its parent [try #6]David Howells
Add a keyctl to install a process's session keyring onto its parent. This replaces the parent's session keyring. Because the COW credential code does not permit one process to change another process's credentials directly, the change is deferred until userspace next starts executing again. Normally this will be after a wait*() syscall. To support this, three new security hooks have been provided: cred_alloc_blank() to allocate unset security creds, cred_transfer() to fill in the blank security creds and key_session_to_parent() - which asks the LSM if the process may replace its parent's session keyring. The replacement may only happen if the process has the same ownership details as its parent, and the process has LINK permission on the session keyring, and the session keyring is owned by the process, and the LSM permits it. Note that this requires alteration to each architecture's notify_resume path. This has been done for all arches barring blackfin, m68k* and xtensa, all of which need assembly alteration to support TIF_NOTIFY_RESUME. This allows the replacement to be performed at the point the parent process resumes userspace execution. This allows the userspace AFS pioctl emulation to fully emulate newpag() and the VIOCSETTOK and VIOCSETTOK2 pioctls, all of which require the ability to alter the parent process's PAG membership. However, since kAFS doesn't use PAGs per se, but rather dumps the keys into the session keyring, the session keyring of the parent must be replaced if, for example, VIOCSETTOK is passed the newpag flag. This can be tested with the following program: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <keyutils.h> #define KEYCTL_SESSION_TO_PARENT 18 #define OSERROR(X, S) do { if ((long)(X) == -1) { perror(S); exit(1); } } while(0) int main(int argc, char **argv) { key_serial_t keyring, key; long ret; keyring = keyctl_join_session_keyring(argv[1]); OSERROR(keyring, "keyctl_join_session_keyring"); key = add_key("user", "a", "b", 1, keyring); OSERROR(key, "add_key"); ret = keyctl(KEYCTL_SESSION_TO_PARENT); OSERROR(ret, "KEYCTL_SESSION_TO_PARENT"); return 0; } Compiled and linked with -lkeyutils, you should see something like: [dhowells@andromeda ~]$ keyctl show Session Keyring -3 --alswrv 4043 4043 keyring: _ses 355907932 --alswrv 4043 -1 \_ keyring: _uid.4043 [dhowells@andromeda ~]$ /tmp/newpag [dhowells@andromeda ~]$ keyctl show Session Keyring -3 --alswrv 4043 4043 keyring: _ses 1055658746 --alswrv 4043 4043 \_ user: a [dhowells@andromeda ~]$ /tmp/newpag hello [dhowells@andromeda ~]$ keyctl show Session Keyring -3 --alswrv 4043 4043 keyring: hello 340417692 --alswrv 4043 4043 \_ user: a Where the test program creates a new session keyring, sticks a user key named 'a' into it and then installs it on its parent. Similar to SO_TYPE returning the socket type, SO_PROTOCOL allows to retrieve the protocol used with a given socket. I am not quite sure why we have that-many copies of socket.h, and why the values are not the same on all arches either, but for where hex numbers dominate, I use 0x1029 for SO_PROTOCOL as that seems to be the next free unused number across a bunch of operating systems, or so Google results make me want to believe. 2009-07-27mm: Pass virtual address to [__]p{te,ud,md}_free_tlb()Benjamin Herrenschmidt
mm: Pass virtual address to [__]p{te,ud,md}_free_tlb() Upcoming paches to support the new 64-bit "BookE" powerpc architecture will need to have the virtual address corresponding to PTE page when freeing it, due to the way the HW table walker works. Basically, the TLB can be loaded with "large" pages that cover the whole virtual space (well, sort-of, half of it actually) represented by a PTE page, and which contain an "indirect" bit indicating that this TLB entry RPN points to an array of PTEs from which the TLB can then create direct entries. Thus, in order to invalidate those when PTE pages are deleted, we need the virtual address to pass to tlbilx or tlbivax instructions. The old trick of sticking it somewhere in the PTE page struct page sucks too much, the address is almost readily available in all call sites and almost everybody implemets these as macros, so we may as well add the argument everywhere. I added it to the pmd and pud variants for consistency. 2009-07-09linker script: unify usage of discard definitionTejun Heo
Discarded sections in different archs share some commonality but have considerable differences. This led to linker script for each arch implementing its own /DISCARD/ definition, which makes maintaining tedious and adding new entries error-prone. This patch makes all linker scripts to move discard definitions to the end of the linker script and use the common DISCARDS macro. As ld uses the first matching section definition, archs can include default discarded sections by including them earlier in the linker script. ia64 is notable because it first throws away some ia64 specific subsections and then include the rest of the sections into the final image, so those sections must be discarded before the inclusion. defconfig compile tested for x86, x86-64, powerpc, powerpc64, ia64, alpha, sparc, sparc64 and s390. 2009-06-24linker script: throw away .discard sectionTejun Heo
x86 throws away .discard section but no other archs do. Also, .discard is not thrown away while linking modules. Make every arch and module linking throw it away. This will be used to define dummy variables for percpu declarations and definitions. This patch is based on Ivan Kokshaysky's alpha percpu patch. 2009-06-21Move FAULT_FLAG_xyz into handle_mm_fault() callersLinus Torvalds
This allows the callers to now pass down the full set of FAULT_FLAG_xyz flags to handle_mm_fault(). All callers have been (mechanically) converted to the new calling convention, there's almost certainly room for architectures to clean up their code and then add FAULT_FLAG_RETRY when that support is added. 2009-06-16kmap_types: make most arches use generic header fileRandy Dunlap
Convert most arches to use asm-generic/kmap_types.h. Move the KM_FENCE_ macro additions into asm-generic/kmap_types.h, controlled by __WITH_KM_FENCE from each arch's kmap_types.h file. Would be nice to be able to add custom KM_types per arch, but I don't yet see a nice, clean way to do that. Built on x86_64, i386, mips, sparc, alpha(tonyb), powerpc(tonyb), and 68k(tonyb). Note: avr32 should be able to remove KM_PTE2 (since it's not used) and then just use the generic kmap_types.h file. Get avr32 maintainer approval. 2009-06-16m32r: remove obsolete hw_interrupt_typeThomas Gleixner
The defines and typedefs (hw_interrupt_type, no_irq_type, irq_desc_t) have been kept around for migration reasons. After more than two years it's time to remove them finally. This patch cleans up one of the remaining users. When all such patches hit mainline we can remove the defines and typedefs finally. 2009-06-16page allocator: use allocation flags as an index to the zone watermarkMel Gorman
ALLOC_WMARK_MIN, ALLOC_WMARK_LOW and ALLOC_WMARK_HIGH determin whether pages_min, pages_low or pages_high is used as the zone watermark when allocating the pages. Two branches in the allocator hotpath determine which watermark to use. This patch uses the flags as an array index into a watermark array that is indexed with WMARK_* defines accessed via helpers. All call sites that use zone->pages_* are updated to use the helpers for accessing the values and the array offsets for setting. 2009-06-16mm: consolidate init_mm definitionAlexey Dobriyan
* create mm/init-mm.c, move init_mm there * remove INIT_MM, initialize init_mm with C99 initializer * unexport init_mm on all arches: init_mm is already unexported on x86. 2009-06-11asm-generic: make pci.h usable directlyArnd Bergmann
Some generic code is using the horribly misnamed PCI_DMA_BUS_IS_PHYS from asm/pci.h. This makes sure that an architecture without PCI support does not have to define this itself but can rely on the asm-generic version. 2009-06-11asm-generic: rename page.h and uaccess.hArnd Bergmann
The current asm-generic/page.h only contains the get_order function, and asm-generic/uaccess.h only implements unaligned accesses. This renames the file to getorder.h and uaccess-unaligned.h to make room for new page.h and uaccess.h file that will be usable by all simple (e.g. nommu) architectures. 2009-06-11asm-generic: rename atomic.h to atomic-long.hArnd Bergmann

2009-06-11asm-generic: introduce asm/bitsperlong.hArnd Bergmann
This provides a reliable way for asm-generic/types.h and other files to find out if it is running on a 32 or 64 bit platform. We cannot use CONFIG_64BIT for this in headers that are included from user space because CONFIG symbols are not available there. We also cannot do it inside of asm/types.h because some headers need the word size but cannot include types.h. The solution is to introduce a new header <asm/bitsperlong.h> that defines both __BITS_PER_LONG for user space and BITS_PER_LONG for usage in the kernel. The asm-generic version falls back to 32 bit unless the architecture overrides it, which I did for all 64 bit platforms. 2009-06-11asm-generic: rename termios.h, signal.h and mman.hArnd Bergmann

2009-05-29flat: fix data sections alignmentOskar Schirmer
The flat loader uses an architecture's flat_stack_align() to align the stack but assumes word-alignment is enough for the data sections. However, on the Xtensa S6000 we have registers up to 128bit width which can be used from userspace and therefor need userspace stack and data-section alignment of at least this size. This patch drops flat_stack_align() and uses the same alignment that is required for slab caches, ARCH_SLAB_MINALIGN, or wordsize if it's not defined by the architecture. It also fixes m32r which was obviously kaput, aligning an uninitialized stack entry instead of the stack pointer.
