2008-10-20container freezer: implement freezer cgroup subsystemMatt Helsley
This patch implements a new freezer subsystem in the control groups framework. It provides a way to stop and resume execution of all tasks in a cgroup by writing in the cgroup filesystem. The freezer subsystem in the container filesystem defines a file named freezer.state. Writing "FROZEN" to the state file will freeze all tasks in the cgroup. Subsequently writing "RUNNING" will unfreeze the tasks in the cgroup. Reading will return the current state. * Examples of usage : # mkdir /containers/freezer # mount -t cgroup -ofreezer freezer /containers # mkdir /containers/0 # echo $some_pid > /containers/0/tasks to get status of the freezer subsystem : # cat /containers/0/freezer.state RUNNING to freeze all tasks in the container : # echo FROZEN > /containers/0/freezer.state # cat /containers/0/freezer.state FREEZING # cat /containers/0/freezer.state FROZEN to unfreeze all tasks in the container : # echo RUNNING > /containers/0/freezer.state # cat /containers/0/freezer.state RUNNING This is the basic mechanism which should do the right thing for user space task in a simple scenario. It's important to note that freezing can be incomplete. In that case we return EBUSY. This means that some tasks in the cgroup are busy doing something that prevents us from completely freezing the cgroup at this time. After EBUSY, the cgroup will remain partially frozen -- reflected by freezer.state reporting "FREEZING" when read. The state will remain "FREEZING" until one of these things happens: 1) Userspace cancels the freezing operation by writing "RUNNING" to the freezer.state file 2) Userspace retries the freezing operation by writing "FROZEN" to the freezer.state file (writing "FREEZING" is not legal and returns EIO) 3) The tasks that blocked the cgroup from entering the "FROZEN" state disappear from the cgroup's set of tasks. 2008-10-20container freezer: add TIF_FREEZE flag to all architecturesMatt Helsley
This patch series introduces a cgroup subsystem that utilizes the swsusp freezer to freeze a group of tasks. It's immediately useful for batch job management scripts. It should also be useful in the future for implementing container checkpoint/restart. The freezer subsystem in the container filesystem defines a cgroup file named freezer.state. Reading freezer.state will return the current state of the cgroup. Writing "FROZEN" to the state file will freeze all tasks in the cgroup. 2008-07-24PAGE_ALIGN(): correctly handle 64-bit values on 32-bit architecturesAndrea Righi
On 32-bit architectures PAGE_ALIGN() truncates 64-bit values to the 32-bit boundary. For example: u64 val = PAGE_ALIGN(size); always returns a value < 4GB even if size is greater than 4GB. The problem resides in PAGE_MASK definition (from include/asm-x86/page.h for example): #define PAGE_SHIFT 12 #define PAGE_SIZE (_AC(1,UL) << PAGE_SHIFT) #define PAGE_MASK (~(PAGE_SIZE-1)) ... #define PAGE_ALIGN(addr) (((addr)+PAGE_SIZE-1)&PAGE_MASK) The "~" is performed on a 32-bit value, so everything in "and" with PAGE_MASK greater than 4GB will be truncated to the 32-bit boundary. Using the ALIGN() macro seems to be the right way, because it uses typeof(addr) for the mask. Also move the PAGE_ALIGN() definitions out of include/asm-*/page.h in include/linux/mm.h. Switch the ColdFire head start up code to be in the .text.head segment. And make sure that segment is at the start of the final linked text segment. Fixes the linker warnings about section use mis-matches: WARNING: vmlinux.o(.text+0xa8): Section mismatch in reference from the variable _clear_bss to the function .init.text:start_kernel() The function _clear_bss() references the function __init start_kernel(). The PIT code has been changed in order to suppport GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS. The priority of the PIT clocksource has been decreased in favor of the DMA timer. pit_cycles_per_jiffy become a constant (PIT_CYCLES_PER_JIFFY) because it is known at compile time and does not change afterwards. the ff1 and bitrev opcode appears in ISA C and ISA A+ what isn't supported by all plattforms. The assembly optimization is automaticly enabled if the compiler understand the required cpu keyword. Russell King did the following back in 2003: <-- snip --> [PCI] pci-9: Kill per-architecture pcibios_update_resource() Kill pcibios_update_resource(), replacing it with pci_update_resource(). pci_update_resource() uses pcibios_resource_to_bus() to convert a resource to a device BAR - the transformation should be exactly the same as the transformation used for the PCI bridges. pci_update_resource "knows" about 64-bit BARs, but doesn't attempt to set the high 32-bits to anything non-zero - currently no architecture attempts to do something different. If anyone cares, please fix; I'm going to reflect current behaviour for the time being. Ivan pointed out the following architectures need to examine their pcibios_update_resource() implementation - they should make sure that this new implementation does the right thing. #warning's have been added where appropriate. ia64 mips mips64 This cset also includes a fix for the problem reported by AKPM where 64-bit arch compilers complain about the resource mask being placed in a u32. <-- snip --> This patch removes the unused pcibios_update_resource() functions the kernel gained since, from FRV, m68k, mips & sh architectures. As the subject says this patch adds the support for kernel preemption on m68knommu Coldfire. I thing the same changes could be applied to 68360 & 68328 but since I don't have the HW, I don't touch it. Kconfig enables the preemption item only on coldfire. 2008-05-03unified (weak) sys_pipe implementationUlrich Drepper
This replaces the duplicated arch-specific versions of "sys_pipe()" with one unified implementation. This removes almost 250 lines of duplicated code. It's marked __weak, so that *if* an architecture wants to override the default implementation it can do so by simply having its own replacement version, since many architectures use alternate calling conventions for the 'pipe()' system call for legacy reasons (ie traditional UNIX implementations often return the two file descriptors in registers) I still haven't changed the cris version even though Linus says the BKL isn't needed. 2008-05-01m68knommu: fix signal handling return pathWilson Callan
The return from software signal handling pushes code on the stack that system calls to the kernels cleanup code. This is borrowed directly from the m68k linux signal handler. The rt signal case is not quite right for the restricted instruction set of the ColdFire parts. And neither the normal signal case or rt signal case properly flushes/pushes the appropriate cache lines. Rework the return path to just call back through some code fragments in the kernel proper (with no MMU in the way we can do this). No cache problems, and less code overall.
