2009-10-27powerpc/iseries: Remove compiler version dependent hackStephen Rothwell
The creation of the flattened device tree depended on the compiler putting the constant strings for an object in a section with a particular name. This was changed with recent compilers. Do this explicitly instead. Without this patch, iseries kernels may silently not boot when built with some compilers. 2009-09-24powerpc: Change archdata dma_data to a unionBecky Bruce
Sometimes this is used to hold a simple offset, and sometimes it is used to hold a pointer. This patch changes it to a union containing void * and dma_addr_t. get/set accessors are also provided, because it was getting a bit ugly to get to the actual data. 2009-09-11powerpc/iseries: Fix oops reading from /proc/iSeries/mf/*/cmdlineBenjamin Herrenschmidt
That code uses dma_mapping_error() with a NULL device, which is a bad idea :-) The proper fix might be to start using some kind of pseudo device for all these low level mappings with the hypervisor but that will be for another day. Since it directly calls into the low level iommu code, I see no problem in having it directly test against DMA_ERROR_CODE instead of using the accessors with a NULL argument for now. 2009-08-20powerpc: Remove use of a second scratch SPRG in STAB codeBenjamin Herrenschmidt
The STAB code used on Power3 and RS/64 uses a second scratch SPRG to save a GPR in order to decide whether to go to do_stab_bolted_* or to handle a normal data access exception. This prevents our scheme of freeing SPRG3 which is user visible for user uses since we cannot use SPRG0 which, on RS/64, seems to be read-only for supervisor mode (like POWER4). This reworks the STAB exception entry to use the PACA as temporary storage instead. Signed-off-by: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org>
2009-08-20powerpc: Use names rather than numbers for SPRGs (v2)Benjamin Herrenschmidt
The kernel uses SPRG registers for various purposes, typically in low level assembly code as scratch registers or to hold per-cpu global infos such as the PACA or the current thread_info pointer. We want to be able to easily shuffle the usage of those registers as some implementations have specific constraints realted to some of them, for example, some have userspace readable aliases, etc.. and the current choice isn't always the best. This patch should not change any code generation, and replaces the usage of SPRN_SPRGn everywhere in the kernel with a named replacement and adds documentation next to the definition of the names as to what those are used for on each processor family. The only parts that still use the original numbers are bits of KVM or suspend/resume code that just blindly needs to save/restore all the SPRGs. 2009-08-20powerpc: Rename exception.h to exception-64s.hBenjamin Herrenschmidt

2009-05-15powerpc/iseries: Fix pci breakage due to bad dma_data initializationStephen Rothwell x
Commit 4fc665b88a79a45bae8bbf3a05563c27c7337c3d "powerpc: Merge 32 and 64-bit dma code" made changes to the PCI initialisation code that added an assignment to archdata.dma_data but only for 32 bit code. Commit 7eef440a545c7f812ed10b49d4a10a351df9cad6 "powerpc/pci: Cosmetic cleanups of pci-common.c" removed the conditional compilation. Unfortunately, the iSeries code setup the archdata.dma_data before that assignment was done - effectively overwriting the dma_data with NULL. Fix this up by moving the iSeries setup of dma_data into a pci_dma_dev_setup callback. 2009-03-11powerpc/kconfig: Kill PPC_MULTIPLATFORMBenjamin Herrenschmidt
CONFIG_PPC_MULTIPLATFORM is a remain of the pre-powerpc days and isn't really meaningful anymore. It was basically equivalent to PPC64 || 6xx. This removes it along with the following changes: - 32-bit platforms that relied on PPC32 && PPC_MULTIPLATFORM now rely on 6xx which is what they want anyway. - A new symbol, PPC_BOOK3S, is defined that represent compliance with the "Server" variant of the architecture. This is set when either 6xx or PPC64 is set and open the door for future BOOK3E 64-bit. - 64-bit platforms that relied on PPC64 && PPC_MULTIPLATFORM now use PPC64 && PPC_BOOK3S - A separate and selectable CONFIG_PPC_OF_BOOT_TRAMPOLINE option is now used to control the use of prom_init.c Signed-off-by: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org>

2008-10-31powerpc: Update remaining dma_mapping_ops to use map/unmap_pageMark Nelson
After the merge of the 32 and 64bit DMA code, dma_direct_ops lost their map/unmap_single() functions but gained map/unmap_page(). This caused a problem for Cell because Cell's dma_iommu_fixed_ops called the dma_direct_ops if the fixed linear mapping was to be used or the iommu ops if the dynamic window was to be used. So in order to fix this problem we need to update the 64bit DMA code to use map/unmap_page. First, we update the generic IOMMU code so that iommu_map_single() becomes iommu_map_page() and iommu_unmap_single() becomes iommu_unmap_page(). Then we propagate these changes up through all the callers of these two functions and in the process update all the dma_mapping_ops so that they have map/unmap_page rahter than map/unmap_single. We can do this because on 64bit there is no HIGHMEM memory so map/unmap_page ends up performing exactly the same function as map/unmap_single, just taking different arguments. This has no affect on drivers because the dma_map_single_attrs() just ends up calling the map_page() function of the appropriate dma_mapping_ops and similarly the dma_unmap_single_attrs() calls unmap_page(). This fixes an oops on Cell blades, which oops on boot without this because they call dma_direct_ops.map_single, which is NULL. 2008-09-15powerpc: Use LOAD_REG_IMMEDIATE only for constants on 64-bitPaul Mackerras
Using LOAD_REG_IMMEDIATE to get the address of kernel symbols generates 5 instructions where LOAD_REG_ADDR can do it in one, and will generate R_PPC64_ADDR16_* relocations in the output when we get to making the kernel as a position-independent executable, which we'd rather not have to handle. This changes various bits of assembly code to use LOAD_REG_ADDR when we need to get the address of a symbol, or to use suitable position-independent code for cases where we can't access the TOC for various reasons, or if we're not running at the address we were linked at. It also cleans up a few minor things; there's no reason to save and restore SRR0/1 around RTAS calls, __mmu_off can get the return address from LR more conveniently than the caller can supply it in R4 (and we already assume elsewhere that EA == RA if the MMU is on in early boot), and enable_64b_mode was using 5 instructions where 2 would do. 2008-07-26dma-mapping: add the device argument to dma_mapping_error()FUJITA Tomonori
Add per-device dma_mapping_ops support for CONFIG_X86_64 as POWER architecture does: This enables us to cleanly fix the Calgary IOMMU issue that some devices are not behind the IOMMU (http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/5/8/423). I think that per-device dma_mapping_ops support would be also helpful for KVM people to support PCI passthrough but Andi thinks that this makes it difficult to support the PCI passthrough (see the above thread). So I CC'ed this to KVM camp. Comments are appreciated. A pointer to dma_mapping_ops to struct dev_archdata is added. If the pointer is non NULL, DMA operations in asm/dma-mapping.h use it. If it's NULL, the system-wide dma_ops pointer is used as before. If it's useful for KVM people, I plan to implement a mechanism to register a hook called when a new pci (or dma capable) device is created (it works with hot plugging). It enables IOMMUs to set up an appropriate dma_mapping_ops per device. The major obstacle is that dma_mapping_error doesn't take a pointer to the device unlike other DMA operations. So x86 can't have dma_mapping_ops per device. Note all the POWER IOMMUs use the same dma_mapping_error function so this is not a problem for POWER but x86 IOMMUs use different dma_mapping_error functions. The first patch adds the device argument to dma_mapping_error. The patch is trivial but large since it touches lots of drivers and dma-mapping.h in all the architecture. This patch: dma_mapping_error() doesn't take a pointer to the device unlike other DMA operations. So we can't have dma_mapping_ops per device. Note that POWER already has dma_mapping_ops per device but all the POWER IOMMUs use the same dma_mapping_error function. x86 IOMMUs use device argument. 2008-07-25powerpc/pseries: iommu enablement for CMORobert Jennings
To support Cooperative Memory Overcommitment (CMO), we need to check for failure from some of the tce hcalls. These changes for the pseries platform affect the powerpc architecture; patches for the other affected platforms are included in this patch. pSeries platform IOMMU code changes: * platform TCE functions must handle H_NOT_ENOUGH_RESOURCES errors and return an error. Architecture IOMMU code changes: * Calls to ppc_md.tce_build need to check return values and return DMA_MAPPING_ERROR for transient errors. Architecture changes: * struct machdep_calls for tce_build*_pSeriesLP functions need to change to indicate failure. * all other platforms will need updates to iommu functions to match the new calling semantics; they will return 0 on success. The other platforms default configs have been built, but no further testing was performed. 2008-07-18nohz: prevent tick stop outside of the idle loopThomas Gleixner
Jack Ren and Eric Miao tracked down the following long standing problem in the NOHZ code: scheduler switch to idle task enable interrupts Window starts here ----> interrupt happens (does not set NEED_RESCHED) irq_exit() stops the tick ----> interrupt happens (does set NEED_RESCHED) return from schedule() cpu_idle(): preempt_disable(); Window ends here The interrupts can happen at any point inside the race window. The first interrupt stops the tick, the second one causes the scheduler to rerun and switch away from idle again and we end up with the tick disabled. The fact that it needs two interrupts where the first one does not set NEED_RESCHED and the second one does made the bug obscure and extremly hard to reproduce and analyse. Kudos to Jack and Eric. Solution: Limit the NOHZ functionality to the idle loop to make sure that we can not run into such a situation ever again. cpu_idle() { preempt_disable(); while(1) { tick_nohz_stop_sched_tick(1); <- tell NOHZ code that we are in the idle loop while (!need_resched()) halt(); tick_nohz_restart_sched_tick(); <- disables NOHZ mode preempt_enable_no_resched(); schedule(); preempt_disable(); } } In hindsight we should have done this forever, but ... /me grabs a large brown paperbag. 2008-07-16powerpc: pci config cleanupJohn Rigby
Choosing PCI or not at config time is allowed on some platforms via an if expression in arch/powerpc/Kconfig. To add a new platform with PCI support selectable at config time, you must change the if expression. This patch makes this easier by changing: bool "PCI support" if <long expression> to bool "PCI support" if PPC_PCI_CHOICE and adding select PPC_PCI_CHOICE to all the config nodes that were previously in the PCI if expression. Platforms with unconditional PCI support continue to just select PCI in their config nodes. There should be an of_node_put when breaking out of a loop that iterates over calls to of_find_all_nodes, as this function does an of_node_get on the value it returns. This was fixed using the following semantic patch. (http://www.emn.fr/x-info/coccinelle/) // <smpl> @@ type T; identifier d; expression e; @@ T *d; ... for (d = NULL; (d = of_find_all_nodes(d)) != NULL; ) {... when != of_node_put(d) when != e = d ( return d; | + of_node_put(d); ? return ...; ) ...} // </smpl> Signed-off-by: Julia Lawall <julia@diku.dk> Cc: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
2007-12-20[POWERPC] fix iSeries PCI resource managementBenjamin Herrenschmidt
The way iSeries manages PCI IO and Memory resources is a bit strange and is based on overriding the content of those resources with home cooked ones afterward. This changes it a bit to better integrate with the new resource handling so that the "virtual" tokens that iSeries replaces resources with are done from the proper per-device fixup hook, and bridge resources are set to enclose that token space. This fixes various things such as the output of /proc/iomem & ioports, among others. This also fixes up various boot messages as well. 2007-12-20[POWERPC] iSeries: Fix unregistering HV event handlersStephen Rothwell
Commit fbd568a3e61a7decb8a754ad952aaa5b5c82e9e5 ("Change synchronize_kernel to _rcu and _sched") changed the deprecated synchronize_kernel() in HvLpEvent_unregisterHandler() to synchronize_rcu(). It turns out that it should have been synchronize_sched(). Signed-off-by: Stephen Rothwell <sfr@canb.auug.org.au> Acked-by: Paul E. 2007-12-14[POWERPC] iSeries: don't printk with HV spinlock heldStephen Rothwell
Printk was observed to hang during module unload due to a limited window of characters that may be sent to the hypervisor. The window only reexpands when we receive an ack from the HV and the spinlock here prevents us from ever processing that ack. This fixes it by dropping the lock before doing the printk, then looping back to the top to reacquire the lock. 2007-12-11[POWERPC] iSeries: Merge vpdinfo.c into pci.cStephen Rothwell
There was only one global function in vpdinfo.c and it was only called from pci.c, so merge them and make the function static. Signed-off-by: Stephen Rothwell <sfr@canb.auug.org.au> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
