2007-05-08Simplify kallsyms_lookup()Alexey Dobriyan
Several kallsyms_lookup() pass dummy arguments but only need, say, module's name. Make kallsyms_lookup() accept NULLs where possible. Also, makes picture clearer about what interfaces are needed for all symbol resolving business. 2007-05-08Fixes and cleanups for earlyprintk aka boot consoleGerd Hoffmann
The console subsystem already has an idea of a boot console, using the CON_BOOT flag. The implementation has some flaws though. The major problem is that presence of a boot console makes register_console() ignore any other console devices (unless explicitly specified on the kernel command line). This patch fixes the console selection code to *not* consider a boot console a full-featured one, so the first non-boot console registering will become the default console instead. This way the unregister call for the boot console in the register_console() function actually triggers and the handover from the boot console to the real console device works smoothly. Added a printk for the handover, so you know which console device the output goes to when the boot console stops printing messages. The disable_early_printk() call is obsolete with that patch, explicitly disabling the early console isn't needed any more as it works automagically with that patch. I've walked through the tree, dropped all disable_early_printk() instances found below arch/ and tagged the consoles with CON_BOOT if needed. The code is tested on x86, sh (thanks to Paul) and mips (thanks to Ralf). Changes to last version: Rediffed against -rc3, adapted to mips cleanups by Ralf, fixed "udbg-immortal" cmd line arg on powerpc. 2007-05-02PCI: Cleanup the includes of <linux/pci.h>Jean Delvare
I noticed that many source files include <linux/pci.h> while they do not appear to need it. Here is an attempt to clean it all up. In order to find all possibly affected files, I searched for all files including <linux/pci.h> but without any other occurence of "pci" or "PCI". I removed the include statement from all of these, then I compiled an allmodconfig kernel on both i386 and x86_64 and fixed the false positives manually. My tests covered 66% of the affected files, so there could be false positives remaining. Untested files are: arch/alpha/kernel/err_common.c arch/alpha/kernel/err_ev6.c arch/alpha/kernel/err_ev7.c arch/ia64/sn/kernel/huberror.c arch/ia64/sn/kernel/xpnet.c arch/m68knommu/kernel/dma.c arch/mips/lib/iomap.c arch/powerpc/platforms/pseries/ras.c arch/ppc/8260_io/enet.c arch/ppc/8260_io/fcc_enet.c arch/ppc/8xx_io/enet.c arch/ppc/syslib/ppc4xx_sgdma.c arch/sh64/mach-cayman/iomap.c arch/xtensa/kernel/xtensa_ksyms.c arch/xtensa/platform-iss/setup.c drivers/i2c/busses/i2c-at91.c drivers/i2c/busses/i2c-mpc.c drivers/media/video/saa711x.c drivers/misc/hdpuftrs/hdpu_cpustate.c drivers/misc/hdpuftrs/hdpu_nexus.c drivers/net/au1000_eth.c drivers/net/fec_8xx/fec_main.c drivers/net/fec_8xx/fec_mii.c drivers/net/fs_enet/fs_enet-main.c drivers/net/fs_enet/mac-fcc.c drivers/net/fs_enet/mac-fec.c drivers/net/fs_enet/mac-scc.c drivers/net/fs_enet/mii-bitbang.c drivers/net/fs_enet/mii-fec.c drivers/net/ibm_emac/ibm_emac_core.c drivers/net/lasi_82596.c drivers/parisc/hppb.c drivers/sbus/sbus.c drivers/video/g364fb.c drivers/video/platinumfb.c drivers/video/stifb.c drivers/video/valkyriefb.c include/asm-arm/arch-ixp4xx/dma.h sound/oss/au1550_ac97.c I would welcome test reports for these files. 2007-05-02[PATCH] x86: Allow percpu variables to be page-alignedJeremy Fitzhardinge
Let's allow page-alignment in general for per-cpu data (wanted by Xen, and Ingo suggested KVM as well). Because larger alignments can use more room, we increase the max per-cpu memory to 64k rather than 32k: it's getting a little tight. 2007-02-14[PATCH] sysctl: remove insert_at_head from register_sysctlEric W. Biederman
The semantic effect of insert_at_head is that it would allow new registered sysctl entries to override existing sysctl entries of the same name. Which is pain for caching and the proc interface never implemented. I have done an audit and discovered that none of the current users of register_sysctl care as (excpet for directories) they do not register duplicate sysctl entries. So this patch simply removes the support for overriding existing entries in the sys_sysctl interface since no one uses it or cares and it makes future enhancments harder. Signed-off-by: Eric W. 2007-02-14[PATCH] sysctl: C99 convert arch/sh64/kernel/traps.c and remove ABI breakageEric W. Biederman
While doing the C99 conversion I notices that the top level sh64 directory was using the binary number for CTL_KERN. That is a no-no so I removed the support for the sysctl binary interface only leaving sysctl /proc support. 2006-12-08[PATCH] LOG2: Implement a general integer log2 facility in the kernelDavid Howells
This facility provides three entry points: ilog2() Log base 2 of unsigned long ilog2_u32() Log base 2 of u32 ilog2_u64() Log base 2 of u64 These facilities can either be used inside functions on dynamic data: int do_something(long q) { ...; y = ilog2(x) ...; } Or can be used to statically initialise global variables with constant values: unsigned n = ilog2(27); When performing static initialisation, the compiler will report "error: initializer element is not constant" if asked to take a log of zero or of something not reducible to a constant. They treat negative numbers as unsigned. When not dealing with a constant, they fall back to using fls() which permits them to use arch-specific log calculation instructions - such as BSR on x86/x86_64 or SCAN on FRV - if available. 2006-12-07[PATCH] shared page table for hugetlb pageChen, Kenneth W
Following up with the work on shared page table done by Dave McCracken. This set of patch target shared page table for hugetlb memory only. The shared page table is particular useful in the situation of large number of independent processes sharing large shared memory segments. In the normal page case, the amount of memory saved from process' page table is quite significant. For hugetlb, the saving on page table memory is not the primary objective (as hugetlb itself already cuts down page table overhead significantly), instead, the purpose of using shared page table on hugetlb is to allow faster TLB refill and smaller cache pollution upon TLB miss. With PT sharing, pte entries are shared among hundreds of processes, the cache consumption used by all the page table is smaller and in return, application gets much higher cache hit ratio. One other effect is that cache hit ratio with hardware page walker hitting on pte in cache will be higher and this helps to reduce tlb miss latency. These two effects contribute to higher application performance. 2006-10-02[PATCH] sh64: remove the use of kernel syscallsArnd Bergmann
sh64 is using system call macros to call some functions from the kernel. The old debug code can simply be removed, since we don't really have that much of a need for it anymore, it was mostly something that was handy during the initial bringup. This also brings us closer to something that looks like readable code again.. I also added a sane kernel_thread() implementation that gets away from this, so that should take care of sh64 at least. 2006-10-02[PATCH] provide kernel_execve on all architecturesArnd Bergmann
This adds the new kernel_execve function on all architectures that were using _syscall3() to implement execve. The implementation uses code from the _syscall3 macros provided in the unistd.h header file. I don't have cross-compilers for any of these architectures, so the patch is untested with the exception of i386. Most architectures can probably implement this in a nicer way in assembly or by combining it with the sys_execve implementation itself, but this should do it for now. This is just a cleanup and logically should not change any real behavior except for one thing: RTC updating code in (old) ppc and xtensa use a condition "jiffies - wall_jiffies == 1". This condition is never met so I suppose it is just a bug. I just remove that condition only instead of kill the whole "if" block. 2006-09-29[PATCH] simplify update_times (avoid jiffies/jiffies_64 aliasing problem)Atsushi Nemoto
Pass ticks to do_timer() and update_times(), and adjust x86_64 and s390 timer interrupt handler with this change. Currently update_times() calculates ticks by "jiffies - wall_jiffies", but callers of do_timer() should know how many ticks to update. Passing ticks get rid of this redundant calculation. Also there are another redundancy pointed out by Martin Schwidefsky. This cleanup make a barrier added by 5aee405c662ca644980c184774277fc6d0769a84 needless. So this patch removes it. As a bonus, this cleanup make wall_jiffies can be removed easily, since now wall_jiffies is always synced with jiffies. (This patch does not really remove wall_jiffies. It would be another cleanup patch) Signed-off-by: Atsushi Nemoto <anemo@mba.ocn.ne.jp> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Cc: "Eric W. 2006-09-29[PATCH] pidspace: is_init()Sukadev Bhattiprolu
This is an updated version of Eric Biederman's is_init() patch. (http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/2/6/280). It applies cleanly to 2.6.18-rc3 and replaces a few more instances of ->pid == 1 with is_init(). Further, is_init() checks pid and thus removes dependency on Eric's other patches for now. Eric's original description: There are a lot of places in the kernel where we test for init because we give it special properties. Most significantly init must not die. This results in code all over the kernel test ->pid == 1. Introduce is_init to capture this case. With multiple pid spaces for all of the cases affected we are looking for only the first process on the system, not some other process that has pid == 1. Signed-off-by: Eric W. 2006-09-12sh64: Drop deprecated ISA tuning for legacy toolchains.Paul Mundt
The original sh64 toolchains required that we tune the ISA level accordingly to not have head.S/entry.S blow up. With current toolchains, this is no longer the case, and the syntax magically changed as well, causing all current toolchains to die a horrible death. Incidentally, code generation in other parts of the kernel is now significantly complex enough that none of the older toolchains make it very far these days, so there's not even any point in preserving legacy compatability via as-option. This fixes a long-standing issue, as noted here: http://lkml.org/lkml/2005/1/5/223 Though at the time the current toolchains were too broken to make adjusting the tuning worthwhile. 2006-07-10[PATCH] tty: Remove include of screen_info.h from tty.hJon Smirl
screen_info.h doesn't have anything to do with the tty layer and shouldn't be included by tty.h. This patches removes the include and modifies all users to directly include screen_info.h. struct screen_info is mainly used to communicate with the console drivers in drivers/video/console. Note that this patch touches every arch and I have no way of testing it. If there is a mistake the worst thing that will happen is a compile error. 2006-06-29[PATCH] genirq: rename desc->handler to desc->chipIngo Molnar
This patch-queue improves the generic IRQ layer to be truly generic, by adding various abstractions and features to it, without impacting existing functionality. While the queue can be best described as "fix and improve everything in the generic IRQ layer that we could think of", and thus it consists of many smaller features and lots of cleanups, the one feature that stands out most is the new 'irq chip' abstraction. The irq-chip abstraction is about describing and coding and IRQ controller driver by mapping its raw hardware capabilities [and quirks, if needed] in a straightforward way, without having to think about "IRQ flow" (level/edge/etc.) type of details. This stands in contrast with the current 'irq-type' model of genirq architectures, which 'mixes' raw hardware capabilities with 'flow' details. The patchset supports both types of irq controller designs at once, and converts i386 and x86_64 to the new irq-chip design. As a bonus side-effect of the irq-chip approach, chained interrupt controllers (master/slave PIC constructs, etc.) are now supported by design as well. The end result of this patchset intends to be simpler architecture-level code and more consolidation between architectures. We reused many bits of code and many concepts from Russell King's ARM IRQ layer, the merging of which was one of the motivations for this patchset. This patch: rename desc->handler to desc->chip. Originally i did not want to do this, because it's a big patch. But having both "desc->handler", "desc->handle_irq" and "action->handler" caused a large degree of confusion and made the code appear alot less clean than it truly is. I have also attempted a dual approach as well by introducing a desc->chip alias - but that just wasnt robust enough and broke frequently. So lets get over with this quickly. The conversion was done automatically via scripts and converts all the code in the kernel. This renaming patch is the first one amongst the patches, so that the remaining patches can stay flexible and can be merged and split up without having some big monolithic patch act as a merge barrier. 2006-06-27[PATCH] node hotplug: register cpu: remove node structKAMEZAWA Hiroyuki
With Goto-san's patch, we can add new pgdat/node at runtime. I'm now considering node-hot-add with cpu + memory on ACPI. I found acpi container, which describes node, could evaluate cpu before memory. This means cpu-hot-add occurs before memory hot add. In most part, cpu-hot-add doesn't depend on node hot add. But register_cpu(), which creates symbolic link from node to cpu, requires that node should be onlined before register_cpu(). When a node is onlined, its pgdat should be there. This patch-set holds off creating symbolic link from node to cpu until node is onlined. This removes node arguments from register_cpu(). Now, register_cpu() requires 'struct node' as its argument. But the array of struct node is now unified in driver/base/node.c now (By Goto's node hotplug patch). We can get struct node in generic way. So, this argument is not necessary now. This patch also guarantees add cpu under node only when node is onlined. It is necessary for node-hot-add vs. cpu-hot-add patch following this. Moreover, register_cpu calculates cpu->node_id by cpu_to_node() without regard to its 'struct node *root' argument. This patch removes it. Also modify callers of register_cpu()/unregister_cpu, whose args are changed by register-cpu-remove-node-struct patch. 2006-06-23[PATCH] fix incorrect SA_ONSTACK behaviour for 64-bit processesLaurent MEYER
- When setting a sighandler using sigaction() call, if the flag SA_ONSTACK is set and no alternate stack is provided via sigaltstack(), the kernel still try to install the alternate stack. This behavior is the opposite of the one which is documented in Single Unix Specifications V3. - Also when setting an alternate stack using sigaltstack() with the flag SS_DISABLE, the kernel try to install the alternate stack on signal delivery. 2006-04-11[PATCH] No arch-specific strpbrk implementationsKyle McMartin
While cleaning up parisc_ksyms.c earlier, I noticed that strpbrk wasn't being exported from lib/string.c. Investigating further, I noticed a changeset that removed its export and added it to _ksyms.c on a few more architectures. The justification was that "other arches do it." I think this is wrong, since no architecture currently defines __HAVE_ARCH_STRPBRK, there's no reason for any of them to be exporting it themselves. Therefore, consolidate the export to lib/string.c. 2006-03-27[PATCH] unify PFN_* macrosDave Hansen
Just about every architecture defines some macros to do operations on pfns. They're all virtually identical. This patch consolidates all of them. One minor glitch is that at least i386 uses them in a very skeletal header file. To keep away from #include dependency hell, I stuck the new definitions in a new, isolated header. Of all of the implementations, sh64 is the only one that varied by a bit. It used some masks to ensure that any sign-extension got ripped away before the arithmetic is done. This has been posted to that sh64 maintainers and the development list. Compiles on x86, x86_64, ia64 and ppc64. 2006-03-23[PATCH] more for_each_cpu() conversionsAndrew Morton
When we stop allocating percpu memory for not-possible CPUs we must not touch the percpu data for not-possible CPUs at all. The correct way of doing this is to test cpu_possible() or to use for_each_cpu(). This patch is a kernel-wide sweep of all instances of NR_CPUS. I found very few instances of this bug, if any. But the patch converts lots of open-coded test to use the preferred helper macros. 2006-03-22[PATCH] hugepage: is_aligned_hugepage_range() cleanupDavid Gibson
Quite a long time back, prepare_hugepage_range() replaced is_aligned_hugepage_range() as the callback from mm/mmap.c to arch code to verify if an address range is suitable for a hugepage mapping. is_aligned_hugepage_range() stuck around, but only to implement prepare_hugepage_range() on archs which didn't implement their own. Most archs (everything except ia64 and powerpc) used the same implementation of is_aligned_hugepage_range(). On powerpc, which implements its own prepare_hugepage_range(), the custom version was never used. In addition, "is_aligned_hugepage_range()" was a bad name, because it suggests it returns true iff the given range is a good hugepage range, whereas in fact it returns 0-or-error (so the sense is reversed). This patch cleans up by abolishing is_aligned_hugepage_range(). Instead prepare_hugepage_range() is defined directly. Most archs use the default version, which simply checks the given region is aligned to the size of a hugepage. ia64 and powerpc define custom versions. The ia64 one simply checks that the range is in the correct address space region in addition to being suitably aligned. The powerpc version (just as previously) checks for suitable addresses, and if necessary performs low-level MMU frobbing to set up new areas for use by hugepages.
