2007-07-27[IA64] Fix build failure in fs/quota.cTony Luck
b716395e2b8e450e294537de0c91476ded2f0395 added code to handle a compatability issue with 32bit quota tools, but the new compat routines are only needed when CONFIG_COMPAT=y (and with this set to 'n' there are compilation problems since some new typedefs are not visible). Reported by Doug Chapman. Fix tuned by a cast of thousands (Andi, Andreas, Arthur, HPA, Willy) Signed-off-by: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com>
2007-07-21x86_64: Quicklist support for x86_64Christoph Lameter
This adds caching of pgds and puds, pmds, pte. That way we can avoid costly zeroing and initialization of special mappings in the pgd. A second quicklist is useful to separate out PGD handling. We can carry the initialized pgds over to the next process needing them. Also clean up the pgd_list handling to use regular list macros. There is no need anymore to avoid the lru field. Move the add/removal of the pgds to the pgdlist into the constructor / destructor. That way the implementation is congruent with i386. 2007-05-02[PATCH] x86-64: Relocatable Kernel SupportVivek Goyal
This patch modifies the x86_64 kernel so that it can be loaded and run at any 2M aligned address, below 512G. The technique used is to compile the decompressor with -fPIC and modify it so the decompressor is fully relocatable. For the main kernel the page tables are modified so the kernel remains at the same virtual address. In addition a variable phys_base is kept that holds the physical address the kernel is loaded at. __pa_symbol is modified to add that when we take the address of a kernel symbol. When loaded with a normal bootloader the decompressor will decompress the kernel to 2M and it will run there. This both ensures the relocation code is always working, and makes it easier to use 2M pages for the kernel and the cpu. AK: changed to not make RELOCATABLE default in Kconfig Signed-off-by: Eric W. 2007-02-11[PATCH] Set CONFIG_ZONE_DMA for arches with GENERIC_ISA_DMAChristoph Lameter
As Andi pointed out: CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA only disables the ISA DMA channel management. Other functionality may still expect GFP_DMA to provide memory below 16M. So we need to make sure that CONFIG_ZONE_DMA is set independent of CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA. Undo the modifications to mm/Kconfig where we made ZONE_DMA dependent on GENERIC_ISA_DMA and set theses explicitly in each arches Kconfig. Reviews must occur for each arch in order to determine if ZONE_DMA can be switched off. It can only be switched off if we know that all devices supported by a platform are capable of performing DMA transfers to all of memory (Some arches already support this: uml, avr32, sh sh64, parisc and IA64/Altix). In order to switch ZONE_DMA off conditionally, one would have to establish a scheme by which one can assure that no drivers are enabled that are only capable of doing I/O to a part of memory, or one needs to provide an alternate means of performing an allocation from a specific range of memory (like provided by alloc_pages_range()) and insure that all drivers use that call. In that case the arches alloc_dma_coherent() may need to be modified to call alloc_pages_range() instead of relying on GFP_DMA. 2006-12-21[PATCH] x86_64: fix boot hang caused by CALGARY_IOMMU_ENABLED_BY_DEFAULTIngo Molnar
one of my boxes didnt boot the 2.6.20-rc1-rt0 kernel rpm, it hung during early bootup. After an hour or two of happy debugging i narrowed it down to the CALGARY_IOMMU_ENABLED_BY_DEFAULT option, which was freshly added to 2.6.20 via the x86_64 tree and /enabled by default/. commit bff6547bb6a4e82c399d74e7fba78b12d2f162ed claims: [PATCH] Calgary: allow compiling Calgary in but not using it by default This patch makes it possible to compile Calgary in but not use it by default. In this mode, use 'iommu=calgary' to activate it. but the change does not actually practice it: config CALGARY_IOMMU_ENABLED_BY_DEFAULT bool "Should Calgary be enabled by default?" default y depends on CALGARY_IOMMU help Should Calgary be enabled by default? if you choose 'y', Calgary will be used (if it exists). If you choose 'n', Calgary will not be used even if it exists. If you choose 'n' and would like to use Calgary anyway, pass 'iommu=calgary' on the kernel command line. If unsure, say Y. it's both 'default y', and says "If unsure, say Y". Clearly not a typo. disabling this option makes my box boot again. The patch below fixes the Kconfig entry. Grumble. 2006-12-08[PATCH] LOG2: Implement a general integer log2 facility in the kernelDavid Howells
This facility provides three entry points: ilog2() Log base 2 of unsigned long ilog2_u32() Log base 2 of u32 ilog2_u64() Log base 2 of u64 These facilities can either be used inside functions on dynamic data: int do_something(long q) { ...; y = ilog2(x) ...; } Or can be used to statically initialise global variables with constant values: unsigned n = ilog2(27); When performing static initialisation, the compiler will report "error: initializer element is not constant" if asked to take a log of zero or of something not reducible to a constant. They treat negative numbers as unsigned. When not dealing with a constant, they fall back to using fls() which permits them to use arch-specific log calculation instructions - such as BSR on x86/x86_64 or SCAN on FRV - if available. 2006-12-08[PATCH] Generic BUG for x86-64Jeremy Fitzhardinge
This makes x86-64 use the generic BUG machinery. The main advantage in using the generic BUG machinery for x86-64 is that the inlined overhead of BUG is just the ud2a instruction; the file+line information are no longer inlined into the instruction stream. 2006-10-02[PATCH] Kprobes: Make kprobe modules more portableAnanth N Mavinakayanahalli
In an effort to make kprobe modules more portable, here is a patch that: o Introduces the "symbol_name" field to struct kprobe. The symbol->address resolution now happens in the kernel in an architecture agnostic manner. 64-bit powerpc users no longer have to specify the ".symbols" o Introduces the "offset" field to struct kprobe to allow a user to specify an offset into a symbol. o The legacy mechanism of specifying the kprobe.addr is still supported. However, if both the kprobe.addr and kprobe.symbol_name are specified, probe registration fails with an -EINVAL. o The symbol resolution code uses kallsyms_lookup_name(). So CONFIG_KPROBES now depends on CONFIG_KALLSYMS o Apparantly kprobe modules were the only legitimate out-of-tree user of the kallsyms_lookup_name() EXPORT. Now that the symbol resolution happens in-kernel, remove the EXPORT as suggested by Christoph Hellwig o Modify tcp_probe.c that uses the kprobe interface so as to make it work on multiple platforms (in its earlier form, the code wouldn't work, say, on powerpc) Signed-off-by: Ananth N Mavinakayanahalli <ananth@in.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Prasanna S Panchamukhi <prasanna@in.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

2006-06-26[PATCH] x86_64: Calgary IOMMU - Calgary specific bitsJon Mason
This patch hooks Calgary into the build, the x86-64 IOMMU initialization paths, and introduces the Calgary specific bits. The implementation draws inspiration from both PPC (which has support for the same chip but requires firmware support which we don't have on x86-64) and gart. Calgary is different from gart in that it support a translation table per PHB, as opposed to the single gart aperture. Changes from previous version: * Addition of boot-time disablement for bus-level translation/isolation (e.g, enable userspace DMA for things like X) * Usage of newer IOMMU abstraction functions Signed-off-by: Muli Ben-Yehuda <muli@il.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Jon Mason <jdmason@us.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2006-06-26[PATCH] x86_64: Rename IOMMU option, fix help and mark option embedded.Andi Kleen
- Rename the GART_IOMMU option to IOMMU to make clear it's not just for AMD - Rewrite the help text to better emphatise this fact - Make it an embedded option because too many people get it wrong. To my astonishment I discovered the aacraid driver tests this symbol directly. This looks quite broken to me - it's an internal implementation detail of the PCI DMA API. Can the maintainer please clarify what this test was intended to do? 2006-06-26[PATCH] x86_64: Clean and enhance up K8 northbridge access codeAndi Kleen
- Factor out the duplicated access/cache code into a single file * Shared between i386/x86-64. - Share flush code between AGP and IOMMU * Fix a bug: AGP didn't wait for end of flush before - Drop 8 northbridges limit and allocate dynamically - Add lock to serialize AGP and IOMMU GART flushes - Add PCI ID for next AMD northbridge - Random related cleanups The old K8 NUMA discovery code is unchanged. New systems should all use SRAT for this. 2006-04-11[PATCH] Configurable NODES_SHIFTYasunori Goto
Current implementations define NODES_SHIFT in include/asm-xxx/numnodes.h for each arch. Its definition is sometimes configurable. Indeed, ia64 defines 5 NODES_SHIFT values in the current git tree. But it looks a bit messy. SGI-SN2(ia64) system requires 1024 nodes, and the number of nodes already has been changeable by config. Suitable node's number may be changed in the future even if it is other architecture. So, I wrote configurable node's number. This patch set defines just default value for each arch which needs multi nodes except ia64. But, it is easy to change to configurable if necessary. On ia64 the number of nodes can be already configured in generic ia64 and SN2 config. But, NODES_SHIFT is defined for DIG64 and HP'S machine too. So, I changed it so that all platforms can be configured via CONFIG_NODES_SHIFT. It would be simpler.
