2007-09-21x86_64: Zero extend all registers after ptrace in 32bit entry path.Andi Kleen
Strictly it's only needed for eax. It actually does a little more than strictly needed -- the other registers are already zero extended. Also remove the now unnecessary and non functional compat task check in ptrace. This is CVE-2007-4573 Found by Wojciech Purczynski Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2007-07-29Remove fs.h from mm.hAlexey Dobriyan
Remove fs.h from mm.h. For this, 1) Uninline vma_wants_writenotify(). It's pretty huge anyway. 2) Add back fs.h or less bloated headers (err.h) to files that need it. As result, on x86_64 allyesconfig, fs.h dependencies cut down from 3929 files rebuilt down to 3444 (-12.3%). 2007-07-21x86_64: Add vDSO for x86-64 with gettimeofday/clock_gettime/getcpuAndi Kleen
This implements new vDSO for x86-64. The concept is similar to the existing vDSOs on i386 and PPC. x86-64 has had static vsyscalls before, but these are not flexible enough anymore. A vDSO is a ELF shared library supplied by the kernel that is mapped into user address space. The vDSO mapping is randomized for each process for security reasons. Doing this was needed for clock_gettime, because clock_gettime always needs a syscall fallback and having one at a fixed address would have made buffer overflow exploits too easy to write. The vdso can be disabled with vdso=0 It currently includes a new gettimeofday implemention and optimized clock_gettime(). The gettimeofday implementation is slightly faster than the one in the old vsyscall. clock_gettime is significantly faster than the syscall for CLOCK_MONOTONIC and CLOCK_REALTIME. The new calls are generally faster than the old vsyscall. Advantages over the old x86-64 vsyscalls: - Extensible - Randomized - Cleaner - Easier to virtualize (the old static address range previously causes overhead e.g. for Xen because it has to create special page tables for it) Weak points: - glibc support still to be written The VM interface is partly based on Ingo Molnar's i386 version. 2007-07-19mm: variable length argument supportOllie Wild
Remove the arg+env limit of MAX_ARG_PAGES by copying the strings directly from the old mm into the new mm. We create the new mm before the binfmt code runs, and place the new stack at the very top of the address space. Once the binfmt code runs and figures out where the stack should be, we move it downwards. It is a bit peculiar in that we have one task with two mm's, one of which is inactive. 2007-07-17sys_fallocate() implementation on i386, x86_64 and powerpcAmit Arora
fallocate() is a new system call being proposed here which will allow applications to preallocate space to any file(s) in a file system. Each file system implementation that wants to use this feature will need to support an inode operation called ->fallocate(). Applications can use this feature to avoid fragmentation to certain level and thus get faster access speed. With preallocation, applications also get a guarantee of space for particular file(s) - even if later the the system becomes full. Currently, glibc provides an interface called posix_fallocate() which can be used for similar cause. Though this has the advantage of working on all file systems, but it is quite slow (since it writes zeroes to each block that has to be preallocated). Without a doubt, file systems can do this more efficiently within the kernel, by implementing the proposed fallocate() system call. It is expected that posix_fallocate() will be modified to call this new system call first and incase the kernel/filesystem does not implement it, it should fall back to the current implementation of writing zeroes to the new blocks. ToDos: 1. Implementation on other architectures (other than i386, x86_64, and ppc). Patches for s390(x) and ia64 are already available from previous posts, but it was decided that they should be added later once fallocate is in the mainline. Hence not including those patches in this take. 2. Changes to glibc, a) to support fallocate() system call b) to make posix_fallocate() and posix_fallocate64() call fallocate() Signed-off-by: Amit Arora <aarora@in.ibm.com>
2007-07-16diskquota: 32bit quota tools on 64bit architecturesVasily Tarasov
OpenVZ Linux kernel team has discovered the problem with 32bit quota tools working on 64bit architectures. In 2.6.10 kernel sys32_quotactl() function was replaced by sys_quotactl() with the comment "sys_quotactl seems to be 32/64bit clean, enable it for 32bit" However this isn't right. Look at if_dqblk structure: struct if_dqblk { __u64 dqb_bhardlimit; __u64 dqb_bsoftlimit; __u64 dqb_curspace; __u64 dqb_ihardlimit; __u64 dqb_isoftlimit; __u64 dqb_curinodes; __u64 dqb_btime; __u64 dqb_itime; __u32 dqb_valid; }; For 32 bit quota tools sizeof(if_dqblk) == 0x44. But for 64 bit kernel its size is 0x48, 'cause of alignment! Thus we got a problem. Attached patch reintroduce sys32_quotactl() function, that handles this and related situations. 2007-05-21Detach sched.h from mm.hAlexey Dobriyan
First thing mm.h does is including sched.h solely for can_do_mlock() inline function which has "current" dereference inside. By dealing with can_do_mlock() mm.h can be detached from sched.h which is good. See below, why. This patch a) removes unconditional inclusion of sched.h from mm.h b) makes can_do_mlock() normal function in mm/mlock.c c) exports can_do_mlock() to not break compilation d) adds sched.h inclusions back to files that were getting it indirectly. e) adds less bloated headers to some files (asm/signal.h, jiffies.h) that were getting them indirectly Net result is: a) mm.h users would get less code to open, read, preprocess, parse, ... if they don't need sched.h b) sched.h stops being dependency for significant number of files: on x86_64 allmodconfig touching sched.h results in recompile of 4083 files, after patch it's only 3744 (-8.3%). 2007-05-08utimensat implementationUlrich Drepper
Implement utimensat(2) which is an extension to futimesat(2) in that it a) supports nano-second resolution for the timestamps b) allows to selectively ignore the atime/mtime value c) allows to selectively use the current time for either atime or mtime d) supports changing the atime/mtime of a symlink itself along the lines of the BSD lutimes(3) functions For this change the internally used do_utimes() functions was changed to accept a timespec time value and an additional flags parameter. Additionally the sys_utime function was changed to match compat_sys_utime which already use do_utimes instead of duplicating the work. Also, the completely missing futimensat() functionality is added. We have such a function in glibc but we have to resort to using /proc/self/fd/* which not everybody likes (chroot etc). Test application (the syscall number will need per-arch editing): #include <errno.h> #include <fcntl.h> #include <time.h> #include <sys/time.h> #include <stddef.h> #include <syscall.h> #define __NR_utimensat 280 #define UTIME_NOW ((1l << 30) - 1l) #define UTIME_OMIT ((1l << 30) - 2l) int main(void) { int status = 0; int fd = open("ttt", O_RDWR|O_CREAT|O_EXCL, 0666); if (fd == -1) error (1, errno, "failed to create test file \"ttt\""); struct stat64 st1; if (fstat64 (fd, &st1) != 0) error (1, errno, "fstat failed"); struct timespec t[2]; t[0].tv_sec = 0; t[0].tv_nsec = 0; t[1].tv_sec = 0; t[1].tv_nsec = 0; if (syscall(__NR_utimensat, AT_FDCWD, "ttt", t, 0) != 0) error (1, errno, "utimensat failed"); struct stat64 st2; if (fstat64 (fd, &st2) != 0) error (1, errno, "fstat failed"); if (st2.st_atim.tv_sec != 0 || st2.st_atim.tv_nsec != 0) { puts ("atim not reset to zero"); status = 1; } if (st2.st_mtim.tv_sec != 0 || st2.st_mtim.tv_nsec != 0) { puts ("mtim not reset to zero"); status = 1; } if (status != 0) goto out; t[0] = st1.st_atim; t[1].tv_sec = 0; t[1].tv_nsec = UTIME_OMIT; if (syscall(__NR_utimensat, AT_FDCWD, "ttt", t, 0) != 0) error (1, errno, "utimensat failed"); if (fstat64 (fd, &st2) != 0) error (1, errno, "fstat failed"); if (st2.st_atim.tv_sec != st1.st_atim.tv_sec || st2.st_atim.tv_nsec != st1.st_atim.tv_nsec) { puts ("atim not set"); status = 1; } if (st2.st_mtim.tv_sec != 0 || st2.st_mtim.tv_nsec != 0) { puts ("mtim changed from zero"); status = 1; } if (status != 0) goto out; t[0].tv_sec = 0; t[0].tv_nsec = UTIME_OMIT; t[1] = st1.st_mtim; if (syscall(__NR_utimensat, AT_FDCWD, "ttt", t, 0) != 0) error (1, errno, "utimensat failed"); if (fstat64 (fd, &st2) != 0) error (1, errno, "fstat failed"); if (st2.st_atim.tv_sec != st1.st_atim.tv_sec || st2.st_atim.tv_nsec != st1.st_atim.tv_nsec) { puts ("mtim changed from original time"); status = 1; } if (st2.st_mtim.tv_sec != st1.st_mtim.tv_sec || st2.st_mtim.tv_nsec != st1.st_mtim.tv_nsec) { puts ("mtim not set"); status = 1; } if (status != 0) goto out; sleep (2); t[0].tv_sec = 0; t[0].tv_nsec = UTIME_NOW; t[1].tv_sec = 0; t[1].tv_nsec = UTIME_NOW; if (syscall(__NR_utimensat, AT_FDCWD, "ttt", t, 0) != 0) error (1, errno, "utimensat failed"); if (fstat64 (fd, &st2) != 0) error (1, errno, "fstat failed"); struct timeval tv; gettimeofday(&tv,NULL); if (st2.st_atim.tv_sec <= st1.st_atim.tv_sec || st2.st_atim.tv_sec > tv.tv_sec) { puts ("atim not set to NOW"); status = 1; } if (st2.st_mtim.tv_sec <= st1.st_mtim.tv_sec || st2.st_mtim.tv_sec > tv.tv_sec) { puts ("mtim not set to NOW"); status = 1; } if (symlink ("ttt", "tttsym") != 0) error (1, errno, "cannot create symlink"); t[0].tv_sec = 0; t[0].tv_nsec = 0; t[1].tv_sec = 0; t[1].tv_nsec = 0; if (syscall(__NR_utimensat, AT_FDCWD, "tttsym", t, AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW) != 0) error (1, errno, "utimensat failed"); if (lstat64 ("tttsym", &st2) != 0) error (1, errno, "lstat failed"); if (st2.st_atim.tv_sec != 0 || st2.st_atim.tv_nsec != 0) { puts ("symlink atim not reset to zero"); status = 1; } if (st2.st_mtim.tv_sec != 0 || st2.st_mtim.tv_nsec != 0) { puts ("symlink mtim not reset to zero"); status = 1; } if (status != 0) goto out; t[0].tv_sec = 1; t[0].tv_nsec = 0; t[1].tv_sec = 1; t[1].tv_nsec = 0; if (syscall(__NR_utimensat, fd, NULL, t, 0) != 0) error (1, errno, "utimensat failed"); if (fstat64 (fd, &st2) != 0) error (1, errno, "fstat failed"); if (st2.st_atim.tv_sec != 1 || st2.st_atim.tv_nsec != 0) { puts ("atim not reset to one"); status = 1; } if (st2.st_mtim.tv_sec != 1 || st2.st_mtim.tv_nsec != 0) { puts ("mtim not reset to one"); status = 1; } if (status == 0) puts ("all OK"); out: close (fd); unlink ("ttt"); unlink ("tttsym"); return status; } [akpm@linux-foundation.org: add missing i386 syscall table entry] Signed-off-by: Ulrich Drepper <drepper@redhat.com> Cc: Alexey Dobriyan <adobriyan@openvz.org> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk-manpages@gmx.net> Cc: <linux-arch@vger.kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2007-03-08[PATCH] x86_64: fix 2.6.18 regression - PTRACE_OLDSETOPTIONS should be acceptedPaolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso
Also PTRACE_OLDSETOPTIONS should be accepted, as done by kernel/ptrace.c and forced by binary compatibility. UML/32bit breaks because of this - since it is wise enough to use PTRACE_OLDSETOPTIONS to be binary compatible with 2.4 host kernels. Until 2.6.17 (commit f0f2d6536e3515b5b1b7ae97dc8f176860c8c2ce) we had: default: return sys_ptrace(request, pid, addr, data); Instead here we have: case PTRACE_GET_THREAD_AREA: case ...: return sys_ptrace(request, pid, addr, data); default: return -EINVAL; This change was a style change - when a case is added, it must be explicitly tested this way. In this case, not enough testing was done. 2007-02-14[PATCH] sysctl: remove insert_at_head from register_sysctlEric W. Biederman
The semantic effect of insert_at_head is that it would allow new registered sysctl entries to override existing sysctl entries of the same name. Which is pain for caching and the proc interface never implemented. I have done an audit and discovered that none of the current users of register_sysctl care as (excpet for directories) they do not register duplicate sysctl entries. So this patch simply removes the support for overriding existing entries in the sys_sysctl interface since no one uses it or cares and it makes future enhancments harder. Signed-off-by: Eric W. 2007-02-11[PATCH] Common compat_sys_sysinfoKyle McMartin
I noticed that almost all architectures implemented exactly the same sys32_sysinfo... except parisc, where a bug was to be found in handling of the uptime. So let's remove a whole whack of code for fun and profit. Cribbed compat_sys_sysinfo from x86_64's implementation, since I figured it would be the best tested. This patch incorporates Arnd's suggestion of not using set_fs/get_fs, but instead extracting out the common code from sys_sysinfo. 2007-01-26[PATCH] x86_64 ia32 vDSO: use VM_ALWAYSDUMPRoland McGrath
This patch fixes ia32 core dumps on x86_64 to include just one phdr for the vDSO vma. Currently it writes a confused format with two phdrs for the address, one without contents and one with. This patch removes the special-case core writing macros for the ia32 vDSO. Instead, it uses VM_ALWAYSDUMP in the vma. This changes core dumps so they no longer include the non-PT_LOAD phdrs from the vDSO, consistent with fixed native i386 core dumps. 2006-10-03[PATCH] VFS: Make filldir_t and struct kstat deal in 64-bit inode numbersDavid Howells
These patches make the kernel pass 64-bit inode numbers internally when communicating to userspace, even on a 32-bit system. They are required because some filesystems have intrinsic 64-bit inode numbers: NFS3+ and XFS for example. The 64-bit inode numbers are then propagated to userspace automatically where the arch supports it. Problems have been seen with userspace (eg: ld.so) using the 64-bit inode number returned by stat64() or getdents64() to differentiate files, and failing because the 64-bit inode number space was compressed to 32-bits, and so overlaps occur. This patch: Make filldir_t take a 64-bit inode number and struct kstat carry a 64-bit inode number so that 64-bit inode numbers can be passed back to userspace. The stat functions then returns the full 64-bit inode number where available and where possible. If it is not possible to represent the inode number supplied by the filesystem in the field provided by userspace, then error EOVERFLOW will be issued. Similarly, the getdents/readdir functions now pass the full 64-bit inode number to userspace where possible, returning EOVERFLOW instead when a directory entry is encountered that can't be properly represented. Note that this means that some inodes will not be stat'able on a 32-bit system with old libraries where they were before - but it does mean that there will be no ambiguity over what a 32-bit inode number refers to. Note similarly that directory scans may be cut short with an error on a 32-bit system with old libraries where the scan would work before for the same reasons. It is judged unlikely that this situation will occur because modern glibc uses 64-bit capable versions of stat and getdents class functions exclusively, and that older systems are unlikely to encounter unrepresentable inode numbers anyway. 2006-09-26[PATCH] i386/x86-64: Work around gcc bug with noreturn functions in unwinderJan Beulich
Current gcc generates calls not jumps to noreturn functions. When that happens the return address can point to the next function, which confuses the unwinder. This patch works around it by marking asynchronous exception frames in contrast normal call frames in the unwind information. Then teach the unwinder to decode this. For normal call frames the unwinder now subtracts one from the address which avoids this problem. The standard libgcc unwinder uses the same trick. It doesn't include adjustment of the printed address (i.e. for the original example, it'd still be kernel_math_error+0 that gets displayed, but the unwinder wouldn't get confused anymore. This only works with binutils 2.6.17+ and some versions of H.J.Lu's 2.6.16 unfortunately because earlier binutils don't support .cfi_signal_frame [AK: added automatic detection of the new binutils and wrote description] Signed-off-by: Jan Beulich <jbeulich@novell.com> Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de>
