2006-06-25[PATCH] mm: remove VM_LOCKED before remap_pfn_range and drop VM_SHMChristoph Lameter
Remove VM_LOCKED before remap_pfn range from device drivers and get rid of VM_SHM. remap_pfn_range() already sets VM_IO. There is no need to set VM_SHM since it does nothing. VM_LOCKED is of no use since the remap_pfn_range does not place pages on the LRU. The pages are therefore never subject to swap anyways. Remove all the vm_flags settings before calling remap_pfn_range. After removing all the vm_flag settings no use of VM_SHM is left. Drop it. 2006-06-23[PATCH] fix incorrect SA_ONSTACK behaviour for 64-bit processesLaurent MEYER
- When setting a sighandler using sigaction() call, if the flag SA_ONSTACK is set and no alternate stack is provided via sigaltstack(), the kernel still try to install the alternate stack. This behavior is the opposite of the one which is documented in Single Unix Specifications V3. - Also when setting an alternate stack using sigaltstack() with the flag SS_DISABLE, the kernel try to install the alternate stack on signal delivery. These two use cases makes the process crash at signal delivery. 2006-06-22[PATCH] zlib_inflate: Upgrade library code to a recent versionRichard Purdie
Upgrade the zlib_inflate implementation in the kernel from a patched version 1.1.3/4 to a patched 1.2.3. The code in the kernel is about seven years old and I noticed that the external zlib library's inflate performance was significantly faster (~50%) than the code in the kernel on ARM (and faster again on x86_32). For comparison the newer deflate code is 20% slower on ARM and 50% slower on x86_32 but gives an approx 1% compression ratio improvement. I don't consider this to be an improvement for kernel use so have no plans to change the zlib_deflate code. Various changes have been made to the zlib code in the kernel, the most significant being the extra functions/flush option used by ppp_deflate. This update reimplements the features PPP needs to ensure it continues to work. This code has been tested on ARM under both JFFS2 (with zlib compression enabled) and ppp_deflate and on x86_32. JFFS2 sees an approx. 10% real world file read speed improvement. This patch also removes ZLIB_VERSION as it no longer has a correct value. We don't need version checks anyway as the kernel's module handling will take care of that for us. This removal is also more in keeping with the zlib author's wishes (http://www.zlib.net/zlib_faq.html#faq24) and I've added something to the zlib.h header to note its a modified version. 2006-06-09kconfig: integrate split config into silentoldconfigRoman Zippel
Now that kconfig can load multiple configurations, it becomes simple to integrate the split config step, by simply comparing the new .config file with the old auto.conf (and then saving the new auto.conf). A nice side effect is that this saves a bit of disk space and cache, as no data needs to be read from or saved into the splitted config files anymore (e.g. include/config is now 648KB instead of 5.2MB). 2006-04-11[PATCH] No arch-specific strpbrk implementationsKyle McMartin
While cleaning up parisc_ksyms.c earlier, I noticed that strpbrk wasn't being exported from lib/string.c. Investigating further, I noticed a changeset that removed its export and added it to _ksyms.c on a few more architectures. The justification was that "other arches do it." I think this is wrong, since no architecture currently defines __HAVE_ARCH_STRPBRK, there's no reason for any of them to be exporting it themselves. Therefore, consolidate the export to lib/string.c. 2006-03-27[PATCH] Notifier chain update: API changesAlan Stern
The kernel's implementation of notifier chains is unsafe. There is no protection against entries being added to or removed from a chain while the chain is in use. The issues were discussed in this thread: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-kernel&m=113018709002036&w=2 We noticed that notifier chains in the kernel fall into two basic usage classes: "Blocking" chains are always called from a process context and the callout routines are allowed to sleep; "Atomic" chains can be called from an atomic context and the callout routines are not allowed to sleep. We decided to codify this distinction and make it part of the API. Therefore this set of patches introduces three new, parallel APIs: one for blocking notifiers, one for atomic notifiers, and one for "raw" notifiers (which is really just the old API under a new name). New kinds of data structures are used for the heads of the chains, and new routines are defined for registration, unregistration, and calling a chain. The three APIs are explained in include/linux/notifier.h and their implementation is in kernel/sys.c. With atomic and blocking chains, the implementation guarantees that the chain links will not be corrupted and that chain callers will not get messed up by entries being added or removed. For raw chains the implementation provides no guarantees at all; users of this API must provide their own protections. (The idea was that situations may come up where the assumptions of the atomic and blocking APIs are not appropriate, so it should be possible for users to handle these things in their own way.) There are some limitations, which should not be too hard to live with. For atomic/blocking chains, registration and unregistration must always be done in a process context since the chain is protected by a mutex/rwsem. Also, a callout routine for a non-raw chain must not try to register or unregister entries on its own chain. (This did happen in a couple of places and the code had to be changed to avoid it.) Since atomic chains may be called from within an NMI handler, they cannot use spinlocks for synchronization. Instead we use RCU. The overhead falls almost entirely in the unregister routine, which is okay since unregistration is much less frequent that calling a chain. Here is the list of chains that we adjusted and their classifications. None of them use the raw API, so for the moment it is only a placeholder. If they are, please let us know or submit a patch to fix them. Note that any chain that gets called very frequently should be atomic, because the rwsem read-locking used for blocking chains is very likely to incur cache misses on SMP systems. (However, if the chain's callout routines may sleep then the chain cannot be atomic.) 2006-03-23[PATCH] more for_each_cpu() conversionsAndrew Morton
When we stop allocating percpu memory for not-possible CPUs we must not touch the percpu data for not-possible CPUs at all. The correct way of doing this is to test cpu_possible() or to use for_each_cpu(). This patch is a kernel-wide sweep of all instances of NR_CPUS. I found very few instances of this bug, if any. But the patch converts lots of open-coded test to use the preferred helper macros. 2006-01-10[PATCH] "tiny-make-id16-support-optional" fixesAdrian Bunk
It seems the "make UID16 support optional" patch was checked when it edited the -tiny tree some time ago, but it wasn't checked whether it still matches the current situation when it was submitted for inclusion in -mm. This patch fixes the following bugs: - ARCH_S390X does no longer exist, nowadays this has to be expressed through (S390 && 64BIT) - in five architecture specific Kconfig files the UID16 options weren't removed Additionally, it changes the fragile negative dependencies of UID16 to positive dependencies (new architectures are more likely to not require UID16 support). 2005-11-09[PATCH] sched: disable preempt in idle tasksNick Piggin
Run idle threads with preempt disabled. Also corrected a bugs in arm26's cpu_idle (make it actually call schedule()). How did it ever work before? Might fix the CPU hotplugging hang which Nigel Cunningham noted. We think the bug hits if the idle thread is preempted after checking need_resched() and before going to sleep, then the CPU offlined. After calling stop_machine_run, the CPU eventually returns from preemption and into the idle thread and goes to sleep. The CPU will continue executing previous idle and have no chance to call play_dead. By disabling preemption until we are ready to explicitly schedule, this bug is fixed and the idle threads generally become more robust. 2005-11-07[PATCH] consolidate sys_ptrace()Christoph Hellwig
The sys_ptrace boilerplate code (everything outside the big switch statement for the arch-specific requests) is shared by most architectures. This patch moves it to kernel/ptrace.c and leaves the arch-specific code as arch_ptrace. Some architectures have a too different ptrace so we have to exclude them. They continue to keep their implementations. For sh64 I had to add a sh64_ptrace wrapper because it does some initialization on the first call. For um I removed an ifdefed SUBARCH_PTRACE_SPECIAL block, but SUBARCH_PTRACE_SPECIAL isn't defined anywhere in the tree. 2005-10-30[PATCH] fix missing includesTim Schmielau
I recently picked up my older work to remove unnecessary #includes of sched.h, starting from a patch by Dave Jones to not include sched.h from module.h. This reduces the number of indirect includes of sched.h by ~300. Another ~400 pointless direct includes can be removed after this disentangling (patch to follow later). However, quite a few indirect includes need to be fixed up for this. In order to feed the patches through -mm with as little disturbance as possible, I've split out the fixes I accumulated up to now (complete for i386 and x86_64, more archs to follow later) and post them before the real patch. This way this large part of the patch is kept simple with only adding #includes, and all hunks are independent of each other. So if any hunk rejects or gets in the way of other patches, just drop it. 2005-09-11kbuild: rename prepare to archprepare to fix dependency chainSam Ravnborg
When introducing the generic asm-offsets.h support the dependency chain for the prepare targets was changed. All build scripts expecting include/asm/asm-offsets.h to be made when using the prepare target would broke. With the limited number of prepare targets left in arch Makefiles the trivial solution was to introduce a new arch specific target: archprepare The dependency chain looks like this now: prepare | +--> prepare0 | +--> archprepare | +--> scripts_basic +--> prepare1 | +---> prepare2 | +--> prepare3 So prepare 3 is processed before prepare2 etc. This guaantees that the asm symlink, version.h, scripts_basic are all updated before archprepare is processed. prepare0 which build the asm-offsets.h file will need the actions performed by archprepare. The head target is now named prepare, because users scripts will most likely use that target, but prepare-all has been kept for compatibility. Updated Documentation/kbuild/makefiles.txt. 2005-08-29[PATCH] convert signal handling of NODEFER to act like other Unix boxes.Steven Rostedt
It has been reported that the way Linux handles NODEFER for signals is not consistent with the way other Unix boxes handle it. I've written a program to test the behavior of how this flag affects signals and had several reports from people who ran this on various Unix boxes, confirming that Linux seems to be unique on the way this is handled. The way NODEFER affects signals on other Unix boxes is as follows: 1) If NODEFER is set, other signals in sa_mask are still blocked. 2) If NODEFER is set and the signal is in sa_mask, then the signal is still blocked. (Note: this is the behavior of all tested but Linux _and_ NetBSD 2.0 *). The way NODEFER affects signals on Linux: 1) If NODEFER is set, other signals are _not_ blocked regardless of sa_mask (Even NetBSD doesn't do this). 2) If NODEFER is set and the signal is in sa_mask, then the signal being handled is not blocked. The patch converts signal handling in all current Linux architectures to the way most Unix boxes work. Unix boxes that were tested: DU4, AIX 5.2, Irix 6.5, NetBSD 2.0, SFU 3.5 on WinXP, AIX 5.3, Mac OSX, and of course Linux 2.6.13-rcX. * NetBSD was the only other Unix to behave like Linux on point #2. The main concern was brought up by point #1 which even NetBSD isn't like Linux. So with this patch, we leave NetBSD as the lonely one that behaves differently here with #2. 2005-07-12[PATCH] xtensa: use ssleep() instead of schedule_timeout()Nishanth Aravamudan
Replace schedule_timeout() with ssleep() to guarantee the task delays as expected. Signed-off-by: Nishanth Aravamudan <nacc@us.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Chris Zankel <chris@zankel.net> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-07-12[PATCH] xtensa: remove old syscallsChris Zankel
This patch fixes some minor bugs introduced by the previous patch (remove old syscalls). Both patches remove the obsolete syscalls. The changes in this patch were suggested by Arnd Bergmann. The vmlinux.lds.S changes are required for the latest gcc/binutils. 2005-07-11[NET]: add a top-level Networking menu to *configSam Ravnborg
Create a new top-level menu named "Networking" thus moving net related options and protocol selection way from the drivers menu and up on the top-level where they belong. To implement this all architectures has to source "net/Kconfig" before drivers/*/Kconfig in their Kconfig file. This change has been implemented for all architectures. Device drivers for ordinary NIC's are still to be found in the Device Drivers section, but Bluetooth, IrDA and ax25 are located with their corresponding menu entries under the new networking menu item. 2005-07-10[PATCH] remove asm-xtensa/ipc.hStephen Rothwell
Now that sys_ipc has been removed from xtensa, asm/ipc.h is no longer needed for that architecture. Not tested, but obviously correct. This file is included only from arch code and this patch also removes the only inclusion. Signed-off-by: Stephen Rothwell <sfr@canb.auug.org.au> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-07-07[PATCH] xtensa: remove old syscallsArnd Bergmann
xtensa is now in -rc1, with the obsolete syscalls still in there, so I guess this about the last chance to correct the ABI. Applying the patch obviously breaks all sorts of user space binaries and probably also requires the appropriate changes to be made to libc. On the other hand, if a decision is made to keep the broken interface, it should at least be a conscious one instead of an oversight. 2005-06-30[PATCH] xtensa: Fix asm macroChris Zankel
Removed dead code in arch/xtensa/kernel/pci.c and use the pci_name() macro. Fixed an error in the delay asm macro: '1' is an invalid immediate value. Signed-off-by: Chris Zankel <chris@zankel.net> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-06-30[PATCH] xtensa: Removed local copy of zlib and fixed O= supportChris Zankel
Removed an unnecessary local copy of zlib (sorry for the add'l traffic). Fixed 'O=' support (thanks to Jan Dittmer for pointing it out). Some minor clean-ups in the make files. 2005-06-30[PATCH] xtensa: use valid_signal()Jesper Juhl
xtensa should use valid_signal() instead of testing _NSIG directly like everyone else. Signed-off-by: Jesper Juhl <juhl-lkml@dif.dk> Cc: Chris Zankel <chris@zankel.net> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-06-25[PATCH] Serial: remove unnecessary register_serial/unregister_serialRussell King
A couple of drivers declare register_serial/unregister_serial prototypes but don't use them. FRV contains a commented out call to register_serial. Since these are deprecated, remove these unnecessary references.
