2007-10-10[NET]: Make NAPI polling independent of struct net_device objects.Stephen Hemminger
Several devices have multiple independant RX queues per net device, and some have a single interrupt doorbell for several queues. In either case, it's easier to support layouts like that if the structure representing the poll is independant from the net device itself. The signature of the ->poll() call back goes from: int foo_poll(struct net_device *dev, int *budget) to int foo_poll(struct napi_struct *napi, int budget) The caller is returned the number of RX packets processed (or the number of "NAPI credits" consumed if you want to get abstract). The callee no longer messes around bumping dev->quota, *budget, etc. because that is all handled in the caller upon return. The napi_struct is to be embedded in the device driver private data structures. Furthermore, it is the driver's responsibility to disable all NAPI instances in it's ->stop() device close handler. Since the napi_struct is privatized into the driver's private data structures, only the driver knows how to get at all of the napi_struct instances it may have per-device. With lots of help and suggestions from Rusty Russell, Roland Dreier, Michael Chan, Jeff Garzik, and Jamal Hadi Salim. Bug fixes from Thomas Graf, Roland Dreier, Peter Zijlstra, Joseph Fannin, Scott Wood, Hans J. Koch, and Michael Chan. [ Ported to current tree and all drivers converted. 2007-07-11PCI: Change all drivers to use pci_device->revisionAuke Kok
Instead of all drivers reading pci config space to get the revision ID, they can now use the pci_device->revision member. This exposes some issues where drivers where reading a word or a dword for the revision number, and adding useless error-handling around the read. Some drivers even just read it for no purpose of all. In devices where the revision ID is being copied over and used in what appears to be the equivalent of hotpath, I have left the copy code and the cached copy as not to influence the driver's performance. Compile tested with make all{yes,mod}config on x86_64 and i386. I noticed that many source files include <linux/pci.h> while they do not appear to need it. Here is an attempt to clean it all up. In order to find all possibly affected files, I searched for all files including <linux/pci.h> but without any other occurence of "pci" or "PCI". I removed the include statement from all of these, then I compiled an allmodconfig kernel on both i386 and x86_64 and fixed the false positives manually. My tests covered 66% of the affected files, so there could be false positives remaining. Fix a problem with Tulip 21142 HP branded PCI cards (PN#: B5509-66001), which feature a NatSemi DP83840A PHY. Without that patch, it is impossible to properly initialize the card's PHY, and it's thus impossible to monitor/configure it. So that it is also an offset from skb->head, reduces its size from 8 to 4 bytes on 64bit architectures, allowing us to combine the 4 bytes hole left by the layer headers conversion, reducing struct sk_buff size to 256 bytes, i.e. 4 64byte cachelines, and since the sk_buff slab cache is SLAB_HWCACHE_ALIGN... :-) Many calculations that previously required that skb->{transport,network, mac}_header be first converted to a pointer now can be done directly, being meaningful as offsets or pointers. Thomas Bachler reports: Commit 7628b0a8c01a02966d2228bdf741ddedb128e8f8 (drivers/net/tulip/dmfe: support basic carrier detection) breaks networking on my Davicom DM9009. ethtool always reports there is no link. tcpdump shows incoming packets, but TX is disabled. Reverting the above patch fixes the problem. The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path (ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()). Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception handling. Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing. I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers. I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile with minimal configurations. This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy. Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one: struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs); And put the old one back at the end: set_irq_regs(old_regs); Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ(). In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary: - update_process_times(user_mode(regs)); - profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs); + update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs())); + profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING); I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself, except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode(). Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers: (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in the input_dev struct. (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs pointer or not. (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type irq_handler_t. 2006-09-27[PATCH] EISA bus MODALIAS attributes supportMichael Tokarev
Add modalias attribute support for the almost forgotten now EISA bus and (at least some) EISA-aware modules. The modalias entry looks like (for an 3c509 NIC): eisa:sTCM5093 and the in-module alias like: eisa:sTCM5093* The patch moves struct eisa_device_id declaration from include/linux/eisa.h to include/linux/mod_devicetable.h (so that the former now #includes the latter), adds proper MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE(eisa, ...) statements for all drivers with EISA IDs I found (some drivers already have that DEVICE_TABLE declared), and adds recognision of __mod_eisa_device_table to scripts/mod/file2alias.c so that proper modules.alias will be generated. There's no support for /lib/modules/$kver/modules.eisamap, as it's not used by any existing tools, and because with in-kernel modalias mechanism those maps are obsolete anyway. 2006-09-12[PATCH] Remove more unnecessary driver printk'sAndy Gospodarek
As I promised last week, here is the first pass at removing all unnecessary printk's that exist in network device drivers currently in promiscuous mode. The duplicate messages are not needed so they have been removed. Some of these drivers are quite old and might not need an update, but I did them all anyway.
