2008-11-06ext3: wait on all pending commits in ext3_sync_fsArthur Jones
In ext3_sync_fs, we only wait for a commit to finish if we started it, but there may be one already in progress which will not be synced. In the case of a data=ordered umount with pending long symlinks which are delayed due to a long list of other I/O on the backing block device, this causes the buffer associated with the long symlinks to not be moved to the inode dirty list in the second phase of fsync_super. Then, before they can be dirtied again, kjournald exits, seeing the UMOUNT flag and the dirty pages are never written to the backing block device, causing long symlink corruption and exposing new or previously freed block data to userspace. This can be reproduced with a script created by Eric Sandeen <sandeen@redhat.com>: #!/bin/bash umount /mnt/test2 mount /dev/sdb4 /mnt/test2 rm -f /mnt/test2/* dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/test2/bigfile bs=1M count=512 touch /mnt/test2/thisisveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryverylongfilename ln -s /mnt/test2/thisisveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryverylongfilename /mnt/test2/link umount /mnt/test2 mount /dev/sdb4 /mnt/test2 ls /mnt/test2/ umount /mnt/test2 To ensure all commits are synced, we flush all journal commits now when sync_fs'ing ext3. 2008-10-27ext3: fix a bug accessing freed memory in ext3_abortHidehiro Kawai
Vegard Nossum reported a bug which accesses freed memory (found via kmemcheck). When journal has been aborted, ext3_put_super() calls ext3_abort() after freeing the journal_t object, and then ext3_abort() accesses it. This patch fix it. 2008-10-23ext3 quota support: fix compile failureLinus Torvalds
This one was due to a merge error: we added a use of nd.path in commit 2d7c820e56ce83b23daee9eb5343730fb309418e ("ext3: add checks for errors from jbd"), and concurrently we got rid of 'nd' and used a naked 'path' in commit 8264613def2e5c4f12bc3167713090fd172e6055 ("[PATCH] switch quota_on-related stuff to kern_path()"). That all merged cleanly, but it didn't actually _work_. This should fix it. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2008-10-23ext3: add checks for errors from jbdHidehiro Kawai
If the journal has aborted due to a checkpointing failure, we have to keep the contents of the journal space. Otherwise, the filesystem will lose uncheckpointed metadata completely and become inconsistent. To avoid this, we need to keep needs_recovery flag if checkpoint has failed. With this patch, ext3_put_super() detects a checkpointing failure from the return value of journal_destroy(), then it invokes ext3_abort() to make the filesystem read only and keep needs_recovery flag. Errors from journal_flush() are also handled by this patch in some places. 2008-10-20ext3: add an option to control error handling on file dataHidehiro Kawai
If the journal doesn't abort when it gets an IO error in file data blocks, the file data corruption will spread silently. Because most of applications and commands do buffered writes without fsync(), they don't notice the IO error. It's scary for mission critical systems. On the other hand, if the journal aborts whenever it gets an IO error in file data blocks, the system will easily become inoperable. So this patch introduces a filesystem option to determine whether it aborts the journal or just call printk() when it gets an IO error in file data. If you mount a ext3 fs with data_err=abort option, it aborts on file data write error. If you mount it with data_err=ignore, it doesn't abort, just call printk(). data_err=ignore is the default. 2008-10-13vfs: Use const for kernel parser tableSteven Whitehouse
This is a much better version of a previous patch to make the parser tables constant. Rather than changing the typedef, we put the "const" in all the various places where its required, allowing the __initconst exception for nfsroot which was the cause of the previous trouble. 2008-07-25ext3: correct mount option parsing to detect when quota options can be changedJan Kara
We should not allow user to change quota mount options when quota is just suspended. I would make mount options and internal quota state inconsistent. Also we should not allow user to change quota format when quota is turned on. On the other hand we can just silently ignore when some option is set to the value it already has (mount does this on remount). 2008-02-14Embed a struct path into struct nameidata instead of nd->{dentry,mnt}Jan Blunck
This is the central patch of a cleanup series. In most cases there is no good reason why someone would want to use a dentry for itself. This series reflects that fact and embeds a struct path into nameidata. Together with the other patches of this series - it enforced the correct order of getting/releasing the reference count on <dentry, vfsmount> pairs - it prepares the VFS for stacking support since it is essential to have a struct path in every place where the stack can be traversed - it reduces the overall code size: without patch series: text data bss dec hex filename 5321639 858418 715768 6895825 6938d1 vmlinux with patch series: text data bss dec hex filename 5320026 858418 715768 6894212 693284 vmlinux This patch: Switch from nd->{dentry,mnt} to nd->path.{dentry,mnt} everywhere. 2007-10-18ext3: support large blocksize up to PAGESIZETakashi Sato
This patch set supports large block size(>4k, <=64k) in ext3 just enlarging the block size limit. But it is NOT possible to have 64kB blocksize on ext3 without some changes to the directory handling code. The reason is that an empty 64kB directory block would have a rec_len == (__u16)2^16 == 0, and this would cause an error to be hit in the filesystem. The proposed solution is treat 64k rec_len with a an impossible value like rec_len = 0xffff to handle this. The Patch-set consists of the following 2 patches. [1/2] ext3: enlarge blocksize - Allow blocksize up to pagesize [2/2] ext3: fix rec_len overflow - prevent rec_len from overflow with 64KB blocksize Now on 64k page ppc64 box runs with this patch set we could create a 64k block size ext3, and able to handle empty directory block. This is because it tests the last block as (start + length) rather than (start + length - 1). This can be seen by trying to mount a filesystem made such as: mkfs.ext2 -F -b 1024 -m 0 -g 256 -N 3744 fsfile 1024 which yields: EXT2-fs error (device loop0): ext2_check_descriptors: Inode table for group 0 not in group (block 101)! EXT2-fs: group descriptors corrupted! There is a similar bug in e2fsprogs, patch already sent for that. (I wonder if inside(), outside(), and/or in_range() should someday be used in this and other tests throughout the ext filesystems...) 2007-07-20mm: Remove slab destructors from kmem_cache_create().Paul Mundt
Slab destructors were no longer supported after Christoph's c59def9f222d44bb7e2f0a559f2906191a0862d7 change. They've been BUGs for both slab and slub, and slob never supported them either. This rips out support for the dtor pointer from kmem_cache_create() completely and fixes up every single callsite in the kernel (there were about 224, not including the slab allocator definitions themselves, or the documentation references). 2007-07-17knfsd: exportfs: add exportfs.h headerChristoph Hellwig
currently the export_operation structure and helpers related to it are in fs.h. fs.h is already far too large and there are very few places needing the export bits, so split them off into a separate header. 2007-07-16ext3: statfs speed upBadari Pulavarty
This is a patch that speeds up statfs. It is very simple - the "overhead" calculation, which takes a huge amount of time for large filesystems, never changes unless the size of the filesystem itself changes. That means we can store it in memory and only recalculate if the filesystem has been resized (almost never). It also fixes a minor problem that we never update the on-disk superblock free blocks/inodes counts until the filesystem is unmounted. While not fatal, we may as well update that on disk when we have the information, and it makes things like debugfs and dumpe2fs report a bit more accurate info. 2007-07-16ext3: fix deadlock in ext3_remount() and orphan list handlingJan Kara
ext3_orphan_add() and ext3_orphan_del() functions lock sb->s_lock with a transaction started with ext3_mark_recovery_complete() waits for a transaction holding sb->s_lock, thus leading to a possible deadlock. At the moment we call ext3_mark_recovery_complete() from ext3_remount() we have done all the work needed for remounting and thus we are safe to drop sb->s_lock before we wait for transactions to commit. Note that at this moment we are still guarded by s_umount lock against other remounts/umounts. 2007-05-07slab allocators: Remove SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL flagChristoph Lameter
I have never seen a use of SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL. It is only supported by SLAB. I think its purpose was to have a callback after an object has been freed to verify that the state is the constructor state again? The callback is performed before each freeing of an object. I would think that it is much easier to check the object state manually before the free. That also places the check near the code object manipulation of the object. Also the SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL callback is only performed if the kernel was compiled with SLAB debugging on. If there would be code in a constructor handling SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL then it would have to be conditional on SLAB_DEBUG otherwise it would just be dead code. But there is no such code in the kernel. I think SLUB_DEBUG_INITIAL is too problematic to make real use of, difficult to understand and there are easier ways to accomplish the same effect (i.e. add debug code before kfree). There is a related flag SLAB_CTOR_VERIFY that is frequently checked to be clear in fs inode caches. Remove the pointless checks (they would even be pointless without removeal of SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL) from the fs constructors. This is the last slab flag that SLUB did not support. Remove the check for unimplemented flags from SLUB.
