2007-07-20mm: Remove slab destructors from kmem_cache_create().Paul Mundt
Slab destructors were no longer supported after Christoph's c59def9f222d44bb7e2f0a559f2906191a0862d7 change. They've been BUGs for both slab and slub, and slob never supported them either. This rips out support for the dtor pointer from kmem_cache_create() completely and fixes up every single callsite in the kernel (there were about 224, not including the slab allocator definitions themselves, or the documentation references). 2007-07-17Introduce is_owner_or_cap() to wrap CAP_FOWNER use with fsuid checkSatyam Sharma
Introduce is_owner_or_cap() macro in fs.h, and convert over relevant users to it. This is done because we want to avoid bugs in the future where we check for only effective fsuid of the current task against a file's owning uid, without simultaneously checking for CAP_FOWNER as well, thus violating its semantics. [ XFS uses special macros and structures, and in general looked ... untouchable, so we leave it alone -- but it has been looked over. ] The (current->fsuid != inode->i_uid) check in generic_permission() and exec_permission_lite() is left alone, because those operations are covered by CAP_DAC_OVERRIDE and CAP_DAC_READ_SEARCH. Similarly operations falling under the purview of CAP_CHOWN and CAP_LEASE are also left alone. 2007-07-16HFS+: add custom dentry hash and comparison operationsDuane Griffin
Add custom dentry hash and comparison operations for HFS+ filesystems that are case-insensitive and/or do automatic unicode decomposition. The new operations reuse the existing HFS+ ASCII to unicode conversion, unicode decomposition and case folding functionality. 2007-07-16HFS+: refactor ASCII to unicode conversion routine for later reuseDuane Griffin
The HFS+ filesystem is case-insensitive and does automatic unicode decomposition by default, but does not provide custom dentry operations. This can lead to multiple dentries being cached for lookups on a filename with varying case and/or character (de)composition. These patches add custom dentry hash and comparison operations for case-sensitive and/or automatically decomposing HFS+ filesystems. Unicode decomposition and case-folding are performed as required to ensure equivalent filenames are hashed to the same values and compare as equal. This patch: Refactor existing HFS+ ASCII to unicode string conversion routine to split out character conversion functionality. This will be reused by the custom dentry hash and comparison routines. This approach avoids unnecessary memory allocation compared to using the string conversion routine directly in the new functions. 2007-05-21Detach sched.h from mm.hAlexey Dobriyan
First thing mm.h does is including sched.h solely for can_do_mlock() inline function which has "current" dereference inside. By dealing with can_do_mlock() mm.h can be detached from sched.h which is good. See below, why. This patch a) removes unconditional inclusion of sched.h from mm.h b) makes can_do_mlock() normal function in mm/mlock.c c) exports can_do_mlock() to not break compilation d) adds sched.h inclusions back to files that were getting it indirectly. e) adds less bloated headers to some files (asm/signal.h, jiffies.h) that were getting them indirectly Net result is: a) mm.h users would get less code to open, read, preprocess, parse, ... if they don't need sched.h b) sched.h stops being dependency for significant number of files: on x86_64 allmodconfig touching sched.h results in recompile of 4083 files, after patch it's only 3744 (-8.3%). 2007-05-07slab allocators: Remove SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL flagChristoph Lameter
I have never seen a use of SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL. It is only supported by SLAB. I think its purpose was to have a callback after an object has been freed to verify that the state is the constructor state again? The callback is performed before each freeing of an object. I would think that it is much easier to check the object state manually before the free. That also places the check near the code object manipulation of the object. Also the SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL callback is only performed if the kernel was compiled with SLAB debugging on. If there would be code in a constructor handling SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL then it would have to be conditional on SLAB_DEBUG otherwise it would just be dead code. But there is no such code in the kernel. I think SLUB_DEBUG_INITIAL is too problematic to make real use of, difficult to understand and there are easier ways to accomplish the same effect (i.e. add debug code before kfree). There is a related flag SLAB_CTOR_VERIFY that is frequently checked to be clear in fs inode caches. Remove the pointless checks (they would even be pointless without removeal of SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL) from the fs constructors. This is the last slab flag that SLUB did not support. Remove the check for unimplemented flags from SLUB. 2007-02-14[PATCH] remove many unneeded #includes of sched.hTim Schmielau
After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes. There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the course of cleaning it up. To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble. Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha, arm, i386, ia64, mips, powerpc, and x86_64 with allnoconfig, defconfig, allmodconfig, and allyesconfig as well as a few randconfigs on x86_64 and all configs in arch/arm/configs on arm. I also checked that no new warnings were introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted by unnecessarily included header files). 2007-02-11[PATCH] extend the set of "__attribute__" shortcut macrosRobert P. J. Day
Extend the set of "__attribute__" shortcut macros, and remove identical (and now superfluous) definitions from a couple of source files. based on a page at robert love's blog: http://rlove.org/log/2005102601 extend the set of shortcut macros defined in compiler-gcc.h with the following: #define __packed __attribute__((packed)) #define __weak __attribute__((weak)) #define __naked __attribute__((naked)) #define __noreturn __attribute__((noreturn)) #define __pure __attribute__((pure)) #define __aligned(x) __attribute__((aligned(x))) #define __printf(a,b) __attribute__((format(printf,a,b))) Once these are in place, it's up to subsystem maintainers to decide if they want to take advantage of them. there is already a strong precedent for using shortcuts like this in the source tree. The ones that might give people pause are "__aligned" and "__printf", but shortcuts for both of those are already in use, and in some ways very confusingly. note the two very different definitions for a macro named "ALIGNED": drivers/net/sgiseeq.c:#define ALIGNED(x) ((((unsigned long)(x)) + 0xf) & ~(0xf)) drivers/scsi/ultrastor.c:#define ALIGNED(x) __attribute__((aligned(x))) also: include/acpi/platform/acgcc.h: #define ACPI_PRINTF_LIKE(c) __attribute__ ((__format__ (__printf__, c, c+1))) Given the precedent, then, it seems logical to at least standardize on a consistent set of these macros. 2006-10-01[PATCH] r/o bind mounts: unlink: monitor i_nlinkDave Hansen
When a filesystem decrements i_nlink to zero, it means that a write must be performed in order to drop the inode from the filesystem. We're shortly going to have keep filesystems from being remounted r/o between the time that this i_nlink decrement and that write occurs. So, add a little helper function to do the decrements. 2006-10-01[PATCH] Streamline generic_file_* interfaces and filemap cleanupsBadari Pulavarty
This patch cleans up generic_file_*_read/write() interfaces. Christoph Hellwig gave me the idea for this clean ups. In a nutshell, all filesystems should set .aio_read/.aio_write methods and use do_sync_read/ do_sync_write() as their .read/.write methods. This allows us to cleanup all variants of generic_file_* routines. 2006-06-23[PATCH] VFS: Permit filesystem to perform statfs with a known root dentryDavid Howells
Give the statfs superblock operation a dentry pointer rather than a superblock pointer. This complements the get_sb() patch. That reduced the significance of sb->s_root, allowing NFS to place a fake root there. However, NFS does require a dentry to use as a target for the statfs operation. This permits the root in the vfsmount to be used instead. linux/mount.h has been added where necessary to make allyesconfig build successfully. Interest has also been expressed for use with the FUSE and XFS filesystems. 2006-06-23[PATCH] VFS: Permit filesystem to override root dentry on mountDavid Howells
Extend the get_sb() filesystem operation to take an extra argument that permits the VFS to pass in the target vfsmount that defines the mountpoint. The filesystem is then required to manually set the superblock and root dentry pointers. For most filesystems, this should be done with simple_set_mnt() which will set the superblock pointer and then set the root dentry to the superblock's s_root (as per the old default behaviour). The get_sb() op now returns an integer as there's now no need to return the superblock pointer. This patch permits a superblock to be implicitly shared amongst several mount points, such as can be done with NFS to avoid potential inode aliasing. In such a case, simple_set_mnt() would not be called, and instead the mnt_root and mnt_sb would be set directly. The patch also makes the following changes: (*) the get_sb_*() convenience functions in the core kernel now take a vfsmount pointer argument and return an integer, so most filesystems have to change very little. (*) If one of the convenience function is not used, then get_sb() should normally call simple_set_mnt() to instantiate the vfsmount. This will always return 0, and so can be tail-called from get_sb(). (*) generic_shutdown_super() now calls shrink_dcache_sb() to clean up the dcache upon superblock destruction rather than shrink_dcache_anon(). This is required because the superblock may now have multiple trees that aren't actually bound to s_root, but that still need to be cleaned up. The currently called functions assume that the whole tree is rooted at s_root, and that anonymous dentries are not the roots of trees which results in dentries being left unculled. However, with the way NFS superblock sharing are currently set to be implemented, these assumptions are violated: the root of the filesystem is simply a dummy dentry and inode (the real inode for '/' may well be inaccessible), and all the vfsmounts are rooted on anonymous[*] dentries with child trees. [*] Anonymous until discovered from another tree. (*) The documentation has been adjusted, including the additional bit of changing ext2_* into foo_* in the documentation. 2006-01-09[PATCH] mutex subsystem, semaphore to mutex: VFS, ->i_semJes Sorensen
This patch converts the inode semaphore to a mutex. I have tested it on XFS and compiled as much as one can consider on an ia64. Anyway your luck with it might be different. 2006-01-06[PATCH] hfsplus oops fixJoshua Kwan
nls_utf8 is available, and the check in hfsplus_fill_super checks the wrong pointer for NULLness (it checks the saved nls, not the new one that it needs to use.) 2005-11-29[PATCH] hfsplus: don't modify journaled volumeRoman Zippel
Access to a journaled HFS+ volume is not officially supported under Linux, so mount such a volume read-only, but users can override this behaviour using the "force" mount option. The minimum requirement to relax this check is to at least check that the journal is empty and so nothing needs to be replayed to make sure the volume is consistent. 2005-11-09[PATCH] changing CONFIG_LOCALVERSION rebuilds too much, for no good reasonOlaf Hering
This patch removes almost all inclusions of linux/version.h. The 3 #defines are unused in most of the touched files. A few drivers use the simple KERNEL_VERSION(a,b,c) macro, which is unfortunatly in linux/version.h. There are also lots of #ifdef for long obsolete kernels, this was not touched. In a few places, the linux/version.h include was move to where the LINUX_VERSION_CODE was used. quilt vi `find * -type f -name "*.[ch]"|xargs grep -El '(UTS_RELEASE|LINUX_VERSION_CODE|KERNEL_VERSION|linux/version.h)'|grep -Ev '(/(boot|coda|drm)/|~$)'` search pattern: /UTS_RELEASE\|LINUX_VERSION_CODE\|KERNEL_VERSION\|linux\/\(utsname\|version\).h Signed-off-by: Olaf Hering <olh@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-10-28[PATCH] gfp_t: fs/*Al Viro
- ->releasepage() annotated (s/int/gfp_t), instances updated - missing gfp_t in fs/* added - fixed misannotation from the original sweep caught by bitwise checks: XFS used __nocast both for gfp_t and for flags used by XFS allocator. The latter left with unsigned int __nocast; we might want to add a different type for those but for now let's leave them alone. That, BTW, is a case when __nocast use had been actively confusing - it had been used in the same code for two different and similar types, with no way to catch misuses. Switch of gfp_t to bitwise had caught that immediately... One tricky bit is left alone to be dealt with later - mapping->flags is a mix of gfp_t and error indications. Left alone for now. 2005-10-26[PATCH] Fix HFS+ to free up the space when a file is deleted.Peter Wainwright
fsck_hfs reveals lots of temporary files accumulating in the hidden directory "\000\000\000HFS+ Private Data". According to the HFS+ documentation these are files which are unlinked while in use. However, there may be a bug in the Linux hfsplus implementation which causes this to happen even when the files are not in use. It looks like the "opencnt" field is never initialized as (I think) it should be in hfsplus_read_inode. This means that a file can appear to be still in use when in fact it has been closed. This patch seems to fix it for me.
