2008-02-07Fix m32r __xchgMathieu Desnoyers
the #endif /* CONFIG_SMP */ should cover the default condition, or it may cause bad parameter to be silently missed. To make it work correctly, we have to remove the ifdef CONFIG SMP surrounding __xchg_called_with_bad_pointer declaration. Thanks to Adrian Bunk for detecting this. 2008-02-07New cmpxchg_local (optimized for UP case) for m32rMathieu Desnoyers
Add __xchg_local, xchg_local (define), __cmpxchg_local_u32, __cmpxchg_local, cmpxchg_local(macro). cmpxchg_local and cmpxchg64_local will use the architecture specific __cmpxchg_local_u32 for 32 bits arguments, and use the generic __cmpxchg_local_generic for 8, 16 and 64 bits arguments. 2008-02-07Sanitize the type of struct user.u_ar0H. Peter Anvin
struct user.u_ar0 is defined to contain a pointer offset on all architectures in which it is defined (all architectures which define an a.out format except SPARC.) However, it has a pointer type in the headers, which is pointless -- <asm/user.h> is not exported to userspace, and it just makes the code messy. Redefine the field as "unsigned long" (which is the same size as a pointer on all Linux architectures) and change the setting code to user offsetof() instead of hand-coded arithmetic. 2008-02-06Fix __const_udelay declaration and definition mismatchesJeff Dike
The declaration and implementation of __const_udelay use different names for the parameter on a number of architectures: include/asm-avr32/delay.h:15:extern void __const_udelay(unsigned long usecs); arch/avr32/lib/delay.c:39:inline void __const_udelay(unsigned long xloops) include/asm-sh/delay.h:15:extern void __const_udelay(unsigned long usecs); arch/sh/lib/delay.c:22:inline void __const_udelay(unsigned long xloops) include/asm-m32r/delay.h:15:extern void __const_udelay(unsigned long usecs); arch/m32r/lib/delay.c:58:void __const_udelay(unsigned long xloops) include/asm-x86/delay.h:16:extern void __const_udelay(unsigned long usecs); arch/x86/lib/delay_32.c:82:inline void __const_udelay(unsigned long xloops) arch/x86/lib/delay_64.c:46:inline void __const_udelay(unsigned long xloops) The units of the parameter isn't usecs, so that name is definitely wrong. It's also not exactly loops, so I suppose xloops is an OK name. This patch changes these names from usecs to xloops. 2008-02-05add mm argument to pte/pmd/pud/pgd_freeBenjamin Herrenschmidt
(with Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com>) The pgd/pud/pmd/pte page table allocation functions get a mm_struct pointer as first argument. The free functions do not get the mm_struct argument. This is 1) asymmetrical and 2) to do mm related page table allocations the mm argument is needed on the free function as well. 2007-10-22Change table chaining layoutJens Axboe
Change the page member of the scatterlist structure to be an unsigned long, and encode more stuff in the lower bits: - Bits 0 and 1 zero: this is a normal sg entry. Next sg entry is located at sg + 1. - Bit 0 set: this is a chain entry, the next real entry is at ->page_link with the two low bits masked off. - Bit 1 set: this is the final entry in the sg entry. sg_next() will return NULL when passed such an entry. It's thus important that sg table users use the proper accessors to get and set the page member. Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <jens.axboe@oracle.com>

2007-10-17remove strict ansi check from __u64 in asm/types.hOlaf Hering
Remove the __STRICT_ANSI__ check from the __u64/__s64 declaration on 32bit targets. GCC can be made to warn about usage of long long types with ISO C90 (-ansi), but only with -pedantic. You can write this in a way that even then it doesn't cause warnings, namely by: #ifdef __GNUC__ __extension__ typedef __signed__ long long __s64; __extension__ typedef unsigned long long __u64; #endif The __extension__ keyword in front of this switches off any pedantic warnings for this expression. 2007-07-17Add __GFP_MOVABLE for callers to flag allocations from high memory that may ↵Mel Gorman
be migrated It is often known at allocation time whether a page may be migrated or not. This patch adds a flag called __GFP_MOVABLE and a new mask called GFP_HIGH_MOVABLE. Allocations using the __GFP_MOVABLE can be either migrated using the page migration mechanism or reclaimed by syncing with backing storage and discarding. An API function very similar to alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() is added for __GFP_MOVABLE allocations called alloc_zeroed_user_highpage_movable(). The flags used by alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() are not changed because it would change the semantics of an existing API. After this patch is applied there are no in-kernel users of alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() so it probably should be marked deprecated if this patch is merged. Note that this patch includes a minor cleanup to the use of __GFP_ZERO in shmem.c to keep all flag modifications to inode->mapping in the shmem_dir_alloc() helper function. This clean-up suggestion is courtesy of Hugh Dickens. Additional credit goes to Christoph Lameter and Linus Torvalds for shaping the concept. Most can use the same structure as ktermios for termios2 (ie the newer ioctl uses the structure matching the current kernel structure) Signed-off-by: Alan Cox <alan@redhat.com> Cc: Bryan Wu <bryan.wu@analog.com> Cc: Ian Molton <spyro@f2s.com> Cc: Haavard Skinnemoen <hskinnemoen@atmel.com> Cc: Yoshinori Sato <ysato@users.sourceforge.jp> Cc: Mikael Starvik <starvik@axis.com> Cc: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com> Cc: "Luck, Tony" <tony.luck@intel.com> Cc: Hirokazu Takata <takata@linux-m32r.org> Cc: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> Cc: Roman Zippel <zippel@linux-m68k.org> Cc: Ralf Baechle <ralf@linux-mips.org> Cc: Kyle McMartin <kyle@mcmartin.ca> Cc: Matthew Wilcox <willy@debian.org> Cc: Heiko Carstens <heiko.carstens@de.ibm.com> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Cc: Paul Mundt <lethal@linux-sh.org> Cc: Kazumoto Kojima <kkojima@rr.iij4u.or.jp> Cc: Richard Curnow <rc@rc0.org.uk> Cc: Miles Bader <uclinux-v850@lsi.nec.co.jp> Cc: Chris Zankel <chris@zankel.net> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2007-05-11m32r: fix pte_to_pgoff(), pgoff_to_pte() and __swp_type() macrosHirokazu Takata
This patch is required to handle file-mapped or swapped-out pages correctly. - Fix pte_to_pgoff() and pgoff_to_pte() macros not to include _PAGE_PROTNONE bit of PTE. Mask value for { ACCESSED, N, (R, W, X), L, G } is not 0xef but 0x7f. - Fix __swp_type() macro for MAX_SWAPFILES_SHIFT(=5), which is defined in include/linux/swap.h. * M32R TLB format [0] [1:19] [20:23] [24:31] +-----------------------+----+-------------+ | VPN |0000| ASID | +-----------------------+----+-------------+ +-+---------------------+----+-+---+-+-+-+-+ |0 PPN |0000|N|AC |L|G|V| | +-+---------------------+----+-+---+-+-+-+-+ || RWX | | * software bits in PTE || | +-- _PAGE_FILE | _PAGE_DIRTY || +---- _PAGE_PRESENT |+---------------- _PAGE_ACCESSED +----------------- _PAGE_PROTNONE Signed-off-by: Hitoshi Yamamoto <hitoshiy@linux-m32r.org> Signed-off-by: Hirokazu Takata <takata@linux-m32r.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2007-05-11m32r: fix switch_to macro to push/pop frame pointer if neededHirokazu Takata
This patch fixes a rarely-happened but severe scheduling problem of the recent m32r kernel of 2.6.17-rc3 or later. In the following previous m32r patch, the switch_to macro was modified not to do unnecessary push/pop operations for tuning. > [PATCH] m32r: update switch_to macro for tuning > 4127272c38619c56f0c1aa01d01c7bd757db70a1 In this modification, only 'lr' and 'sp' registers are push/pop'ed, assuming that the m32r kernel is always compiled with -fomit-frame-pointer option. However, in 2.6 kernel, kernel/sched.c is irregularly compiled with -fno-omit-frame-pointer if CONFIG_SCHED_NO_NO_OMIT_FRAME_POINTER is not defined. -- kernel/Makefile -- : ifneq ($(CONFIG_SCHED_NO_NO_OMIT_FRAME_POINTER),y) # According to Alan Modra <alan@linuxcare.com.au>, the -fno-omit-frame-pointer is # needed for x86 only. Why this used to be enabled for all architectures is beyond # me. I suspect most platforms don't need this, but until we know that for sure # I turn this off for IA-64 only. Andreas Schwab says it's also needed on m68k # to get a correct value for the wait-channel (WCHAN in ps). --davidm CFLAGS_sched.o := $(PROFILING) -fno-omit-frame-pointer endif : --- Therefore, for the recent m32r kernel, we have to push/pop 'fp' (frame pointer) if CONFIG_FRAME_POINTER is defined or CONFIG_SCHED_NO_NO_OMIT_FRAME_POINTER is not defined. 2007-05-09Remove hardcoding of hard_smp_processor_id on UP systemsFernando Luis Vazquez Cao
With the advent of kdump, the assumption that the boot CPU when booting an UP kernel is always the CPU with a particular hardware ID (often 0) (usually referred to as BSP on some architectures) is not valid anymore. The reason being that the dump capture kernel boots on the crashed CPU (the CPU that invoked crash_kexec), which may be or may not be that particular CPU. Move definition of hard_smp_processor_id for the UP case to architecture-specific code ("asm/smp.h") where it belongs, so that each architecture can provide its own implementation. 2007-05-08atomic.h: atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular ↵Mathieu Desnoyers
dependency atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular dependency. I agree (with Andi Kleen) this typeof is not needed and more error prone. All the original atomic.h code that uses cmpxchg (which includes the atomic_add_unless) uses defines instead of inline functions, probably to circumvent a circular dependency between system.h and atomic.h on powerpc (which my patch addresses). Therefore, it makes sense to use inline functions that will provide type checking. atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular dependency. Digging into the FRV architecture shows me that it is also affected by such a circular dependency. Here is the diff applying this against the rest of my atomic.h patches. It applies over the atomic.h standardization patches. 2007-05-08Clean up mostly unused IOSPACE macrosDavid Gibson
Most architectures defined three macros, MK_IOSPACE_PFN(), GET_IOSPACE() and GET_PFN() in pgtable.h. However, the only callers of any of these macros are in Sparc specific code, either in arch/sparc, arch/sparc64 or drivers/sbus. This patch removes the redundant macros from all architectures except sparc and sparc64.
