2007-05-07swsusp: free more memoryRafael J. Wysocki
Move the definition of PAGES_FOR_IO to kernel/power/power.h and introduce SPARE_PAGES representing the number of pages that should be freed by the swsusp's memory shrinker in addition to PAGES_FOR_IO so that device drivers can allocate some memory (up to 1 MB total) in their .suspend() routines without causing the suspend to fail. 2007-05-07kconfig: mention 'hibernation' not just swsuspDavid Brownell
Clarify that "software suspend" is what's called "hibernation" in most user interfaces, shrinking a terminology gap. (Examples include Gnome and MS-Windows.) Also provide a more succinct description of what it does, so you won't have to read the whole novel in Kconfig; and highlights just why the lack of BIOS requirements for swsusp are a big deal. 2007-05-07power management: change /sys/power/disk displayJohannes Berg
Change /sys/power/disk to display all valid modes as well as the currently selected one in a fashion known from the LED subsystem. 2007-05-07remove software_suspend()Johannes Berg
Remove software_suspend() and all its users since pm_suspend(PM_SUSPEND_DISK) should be equivalent and there's no point in having two interfaces for the same thing. The patch also changes the valid_state function to return 0 (false) for PM_SUSPEND_DISK when SOFTWARE_SUSPEND is not configured instead of accepting it and having the whole thing fail later. 2007-05-07swsusp: use rbtree for tracking allocated swapRafael J. Wysocki
Make swsusp use extents instead of a bitmap to trace swap pages allocated for saving the image (the tracking is only needed in case there's an error, so that the allocated swap pages can be released). This should allow us to reduce the memory usage, practically always, and improve performance. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. 2007-05-07swsusp: use GFP_KERNEL for creating basic data structuresRafael J. Wysocki
Make swsusp call create_basic_memory_bitmaps() before processes are frozen, so that GFP_KERNEL allocations can be made in it. Additionally, ensure that the swsusp's userland interface won't be used while either pm_suspend_disk() or software_resume() is being executed. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. 2007-05-07swsusp: do not use page flagsRafael J. Wysocki
Make swsusp use memory bitmaps instead of page flags for marking 'nosave' and free pages. This allows us to 'recycle' two page flags that can be used for other purposes. Also, the memory needed to store the bitmaps is allocated when necessary (ie. before the suspend) and freed after the resume which is more reasonable. The patch is designed to minimize the amount of changes and there are some nice simplifications and optimizations possible on top of it. I am going to implement them separately in the future. 2007-05-02remove "struct subsystem" as it is no longer neededGreg Kroah-Hartman

2007-05-02[PATCH] x86-64: do not use virt_to_page on kernel data addressVivek Goyal
o virt_to_page() call should be used on kernel linear addresses and not on kernel text and data addresses. Swsusp code uses it on kernel data (statically allocated swsusp_header). o Allocate swsusp_header dynamically so that virt_to_page() can be used safely. o I am changing this because in next few patches, __pa() on x86_64 will no longer support kernel text and data addresses and hibernation breaks. 2007-05-02[PATCH] x86: Move swsusp __pa() dependent code to arch portionVivek Goyal
o __pa() should be used only on kernel linearly mapped virtual addresses and not on kernel text and data addresses. o Hibernation code needs to determine the physical address associated with kernel symbol to mark a section boundary which contains pages which don't have to be saved and restored during hibernate/resume operation. o Move this piece of code in arch dependent section. So that architectures which don't have kernel text/data mapped into kernel linearly mapped region can come up with their own ways of determining physical addresses associated with a kernel text. 2007-04-30power management: force pm_ops.valid callback to be assignedJohannes Berg
This patch changes the docs and behaviour from "all states valid" to "no states valid" if no .valid callback is assigned. Users of pm_ops that only need mem sleep can assign pm_valid_only_mem without any overhead, others will require more elaborate callbacks. Now that all users of pm_ops have a .valid callback this is a safe thing to do and prevents things from getting messy again as they were before. 2007-04-30power management: implement pm_ops.valid for everybodyJohannes Berg
Almost all users of pm_ops only support mem sleep, don't check in .valid and don't reject any others in .prepare so users can be confused if they check /sys/power/state, especially when new states are added (these would then result in s-t-r although they're supposed to be something different). This patch implements a generic pm_valid_only_mem function that is then exported for users and puts it to use in almost all existing pm_ops. 2007-04-30rework pm_ops pm_disk_mode, kill misuseJohannes Berg
This patch series cleans up some misconceptions about pm_ops. Some users of the pm_ops structure attempt to use it to stop the user from entering suspend to disk, this, however, is not possible since the user can always use "shutdown" in /sys/power/disk and then the pm_ops are never invoked. Also, platforms that don't support suspend to disk simply should not allow configuring SOFTWARE_SUSPEND (read the help text on it, it only selects suspend to disk and nothing else, all the other stuff depends on PM). The pm_ops structure is actually intended to provide a way to enter platform-defined sleep states (currently supported states are "standby" and "mem" (suspend to ram)) and additionally (if SOFTWARE_SUSPEND is configured) allows a platform to support a platform specific way to enter low-power mode once everything has been saved to disk. This is currently only used by ACPI (S4). This patch: The pm_ops.pm_disk_mode is used in totally bogus ways since nobody really seems to understand what it actually does. This patch clarifies the pm_disk_mode description. It also removes all the arm and sh users that think they can veto suspend to disk via pm_ops; not so since the user can always do echo shutdown > /sys/power/disk, they need to find a better way involving Kconfig or such. ACPI is the only user left with a non-zero pm_disk_mode. The patch also sets the default mode to shutdown again, but when a new pm_ops is registered its pm_disk_mode is selected as default, that way the default stays for ACPI where it is apparently required. 2007-03-27[PATCH] Revert "swsusp: disable nonboot CPUs before entering platform suspend"Rafael J. Wysocki
This reverts commit 94985134b7b46848267ed6b734320db01c974e72 and insteads removes the WARN_ON() that caused that commit in the first place. The problem is that we call disable_nonboot_cpus() in swsusp before powering down the system in order to avoid triggering the WARN_ON() in arch/x86_64/kernel/acpi/sleep.c:init_low_mapping() and this doesn't work well on Thomas' system. So instead, remove the WARN_ON() in arch/x86_64/kernel/acpi/sleep.c: init_low_mapping(), which triggers every time during the suspend to disk in the platform mode, as the potential problem it is related to doesn't seem to occur in practice. [ I think we might want to disallow the case of multiple users of that mm, or something. Normally, playing with the current process page tables on the current CPU should be fine as long as we don't have other threads using those tables at the same time.. 2007-02-11[PATCH] swsusp: Change pm_ops handling by userland interfaceRafael J. Wysocki
Make the userland interface of swsusp call pm_ops->finish() after enable_nonboot_cpus() and before resume_device(), as indicated by the recent discussion on Linux-PM (cf. http://lists.osdl.org/pipermail/linux-pm/2006-November/004164.html). This patch changes the SNAPSHOT_PMOPS ioctl so that its first function, PMOPS_PREPARE, only sets a switch turning the platform suspend mode on, and its last function, PMOPS_FINISH, only checks if the platform mode is enabled. 2007-02-11[PATCH] PM: Change code ordering in main.cRafael J. Wysocki
As indicated in a recent thread on Linux-PM, it's necessary to call pm_ops->finish() before devce_resume(), but enable_nonboot_cpus() has to be called before pm_ops->finish() (cf. http://lists.osdl.org/pipermail/linux-pm/2006-November/004164.html). For consistency, it seems reasonable to call disable_nonboot_cpus() after device_suspend(). This way the suspend code will remain symmetrical with respect to the resume code and it may allow us to speed up things in the future by suspending and resuming devices and/or saving the suspend image in many threads. The following series of patches reorders the suspend and resume code so that nonboot CPUs are disabled after devices have been suspended and enabled before the devices are resumed. It also causes pm_ops->finish() to be called after enable_nonboot_cpus() wherever necessary. This patch: Change the ordering of code in kernel/power/main.c so that device_suspend() is called before disable_nonboot_cpus() and pm_ops->finish() is called after enable_nonboot_cpus() and before device_resume(), as indicated by recent discussion on Linux-PM (cf. http://lists.osdl.org/pipermail/linux-pm/2006-November/004164.html). 2007-02-11[PATCH] Drop free_pages()Christoph Lameter
nr_free_pages is now a simple access to a global variable. Make it a macro instead of a function. The nr_free_pages now requires vmstat.h to be included. There is one occurrence in power management where we need to add the include. Directly refrer to global_page_state() there to clarify why the #include was added. 2007-02-09[APM] Add shared version of APM emulationRalf Baechle

2007-01-05[PATCH] swsusp: Do not fail if resume device is not setRafael J. Wysocki
In the kernels later than 2.6.19 there is a regression that makes swsusp fail if the resume device is not explicitly specified. It can be fixed by adding an additional parameter to mm/swapfile.c:swap_type_of() allowing us to pass the (struct block_device *) corresponding to the first available swap back to the caller. 2006-12-13[PATCH] PM: Fix SMP races in the freezerRafael J. Wysocki
Currently, to tell a task that it should go to the refrigerator, we set the PF_FREEZE flag for it and send a fake signal to it. Unfortunately there are two SMP-related problems with this approach. First, a task running on another CPU may be updating its flags while the freezer attempts to set PF_FREEZE for it and this may leave the task's flags in an inconsistent state. Second, there is a potential race between freeze_process() and refrigerator() in which freeze_process() running on one CPU is reading a task's PF_FREEZE flag while refrigerator() running on another CPU has just set PF_FROZEN for the same task and attempts to reset PF_FREEZE for it. If the refrigerator wins the race, freeze_process() will state that PF_FREEZE hasn't been set for the task and will set it unnecessarily, so the task will go to the refrigerator once again after it's been thawed. To solve first of these problems we need to stop using PF_FREEZE to tell tasks that they should go to the refrigerator. Instead, we can introduce a special TIF_*** flag and use it for this purpose, since it is allowed to change the other tasks' TIF_*** flags and there are special calls for it. To avoid the freeze_process()-refrigerator() race we can make freeze_process() to always check the task's PF_FROZEN flag after it's read its "freeze" flag. We should also make sure that refrigerator() will always reset the task's "freeze" flag after it's set PF_FROZEN for it. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. 2006-12-13[PATCH] PM: Fix freezing of stopped tasksRafael J. Wysocki
Currently, if a task is stopped (ie. it's in the TASK_STOPPED state), it is considered by the freezer as unfreezeable. However, there may be a race between the freezer and the delivery of the continuation signal to the task resulting in the task running after we have finished freezing the other tasks. This, in turn, may lead to undesirable effects up to and including data corruption. To prevent this from happening we first need to make the freezer consider stopped tasks as freezeable. For this purpose we need to make freezeable() stop returning 0 for these tasks and we need to force them to enter the refrigerator. However, if there's no continuation signal in the meantime, the stopped tasks should remain stopped after all processes have been thawed, so we need to send an additional SIGSTOP to each of them before waking it up. Also, a stopped task that has just been woken up should first check if there's a freezing request for it and go to the refrigerator if that's the case. Signed-off-by: Rafael J.
