The effect probably was that the read-write spinlocks never locked. However, since the locks are only used in CONFIG_SMP and SMP CRIS is experimental, it has never been identified as a problem. MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit The code didn't test the pointer to the newly allocated memory, but a parameter sent in as value. Since the input parameter was most often set, the code would have used a null pointer if the kmalloc failed.
